am I missing some sort of backing plate between my caliper piston and brake pads? Is this how it’s supposed to look with this gap here?

...and laying the new pads over the old ones, it seems that there’ll be a sliver of a gap on the bottom edge of the pad/piston now too. Seems like a place for mud, etc. to collect.

It's normal. Nothing really gets in there unless you're driving through a muddy swamp or something. But even if something does get in there, it won't hurt anything.

I guess I’ll just clean it up and paint it then..

Cleaning it up a little bit. I’ll blast it one more time tomorrow, then paint the tubes and center section. Then I’ll rebuild the hubs, new rotors and knuckles. I have a lube locker gasket and some royal purple and it should be good for a couple more years of goofing off.

I found a picture of mine and you can see the exposed piston is normal. I like how your simple engine swap is going... Looks great!

Lol, thanks! It’s your fault!

You let a guy borrow your hub nut tool, this is what happens. Not to mention posting up pics of your truck like a dangling carrot.

My vent tube elbow was just siliconed into it’s hole. So I’m going to tap the front and rear diff vents for a threaded fitting. I’m planning on hitting home depot later to come up with something. Just curious what you guys have done here..

All blasted and cleaned up and waiting for the mineral spirits to dry. Painting them up after some lunch.

Tapping the breather hole for npt should work fine. I've never had a factory breather nipple fall out yet though.

Mine came out too. I didn't tap the housing since it was obvious the threads on the spout is what stripped. I found a brass fitting in my junk coffee cans that threaded right in and so far is holding very well.

So they are threaded from the factory? Mine just fell out when I peeled the red silicone off that was holding it in. When I looked closely I thought I could almost see threads, but it was pretty much smooth so I assumed that it was some sort of ribbing to aid in a press fit.
