I want to ask how other people, that have limited exhaust fabrication tools, have installed their own exhaust so it looks good.
As I am on a farm that is a long way from the parts store, I wanted to mock-up my exhaust routing and then buy the parts and follow my model. I will be using basic mandrel bent walker pipe (2.5 inch OD) with a set of glass packs (blue bottles).
As my 87 is lowered by the previous owner some things were not completed correctly so I tore out the transmission mount, exhaust system, emergency brake cables and some of the brake line. The reason being is it is a 87 body is on a 1978 heavy duty frame with a 12 bolt posi rear end. The older emergency brake cables crossed under the tranny which was a mess. I found the brackets for the late model emergency brake system and have converted the truck to a later style emergency brake which the cables are on the driver side and out of the way.
Old tranny mount removed and installed an IFS fabbed mount. It is a really "pretty" mount that allows the exhaust to go straight through rather than under the tranny mount. The exhaust was scraping and ovalled. This will also allow a nice crossover for better performance.
The brake line adjustment is so I can put a cable hoist spare tire mount between the frame rails and the rearend. I will post how I did it when it is complete.
So now to routing of exhaust. I was planning on using a flange that bolts on to my header and using 1/2 inch copper tubing to hand form my exhaust routing as a template. Had the tube on the wall so not sure of the cost per foot. What is interesting is, I was able to thread the inside of the copper tube to fit a 7/16 coarse bolt. I planned on forming it in pieces to reflect the parts that I can purchase. I will use pieces of 7/16 threaded rod to attach pieces of copper tubing together. Once I have the routing completed I can then buy the parts and follow the route. I plan on mig welding everything together and building my own custom cross over.
Then once I am done, the copper tube can be hung on the wall or on a "still", whichever is most convenient.
My question is are there any other mock-up tricks that are quick and easy? Maybe better than copper tubing?
