Correct Tail Gate

Good Afternoon,

I picked up a 74 Cheyenne Super 10 Shortbed project. The truck was white with woodgrain striping originally. The truck came with a donor bed from a mid 80's model. The tailgate has the aluminum insert. What was correct for my models trim package? A plain chevrolet tailgate with the trim for striping or a different insert? If a different insert do they all mount the same or do I need to swap the tailgate? This is my first square body project so learning specific for parts.

80's trucks were the only ones that came with those type inserts, very few 70's got a different style. Most likely looked similar to my 79, probably didn't have the lettering colored on yours though. Mine is a bonanza truck and has the dual trim for two tone.

That is the same as my 74. As far as I know mine is original.

The 73-80 gates are different than the 81 & up. See the red boxes below. I know the current tailgate trim you have won't fit on the earlier style. Photo #3 is the narrower trim that's available for 73-80, but I've never seen it with the woodgrain option and it won't fit 81 & up gates.

Thanks alot guys. If there any issue with using the trim for the two tone on the newer bed? Today I got lucky at pick n pull. $60 I got the correct tailgate! It was the only piece of the body not rusted out on a 74 they had. Some dings and dents but nothing that can't be repaired.

To add what Craig said, there is also a large tail gate band in the 70's. I have one for my '76 K25

Note it doesn't have the wide black line around the perimeter like the 80's.

Did you get the hinges off the box? You will need to change the hinge, they are different as well.

No but I can go back and look at what's there tomorrow. What's different? Can you swap one to the other?

The round cups are a different size, the old style will bolt on to the 80's box.

No the later round eyes came with that style of bed side. Here's my old '79.
