Confusion may come from new cars because cars are required to have a turn signal visible from the rear, the front, and the front side on all passenger cars and light trucks. Modern cars typically wrap a headlight around the quarter panel and it does both innately. Some vehicles will have a side marker and a separate turn signal on the side, etc. Looks usually determines it. The rear is usually just rear-facing but some have a wrap around that will show, but its not required. my 1999 park avenue has the wrap around. the side marker and the turn are together but wrap the fascia and alternate, with the turn in front being dual filament and the side being just amber 194, and the rear not visible to the sides
