Good warning @bucket for everyone.
It’s literally everywhere.
Selling the Camaro a couple months ago was full of ‘em.
There were a few that I got hooked and strung them along. Start out acting dumb to keep their interest and then respond with increasingly silly or ridiculous responses. More fun than just deleting or telling them to FO right away. Even more fun when you actually upset them and they start arguing with you!

If you look at GMSB members you find thousands of new members with few or no posts. This seems to me to be a big security risk. They should be removed as members. There’s got to be a way to do that other than 1 at a time, as the moderators don’t have the time to do it that way.
I brought that up a while back. Page after page of new members with zero posts. I was looking up a member's name so I could tag them, and that's when I saw there is easily a 1000 or more newbs with zero posts

I second everything that has already been said.
I have personally experienced such attempted scams three or more times.
And by an apparently well known and respected forum member. Or an impersonator. Not sure which.

Just a notice, I edited my original post because I do not want newer members to feel unwelcome or like they are not part of the community. Everyone just needs to be cautious of the potential of a scam.

I'm that old guy that doesn't know how to post pics but I do know how to identify a scammer and welcome the challenge. Game on.

Shout out to @bucket :
Thank you sir for "kick'n it".

For my "Intake Breather wanted" post, I got a PM that said, hey I know this guy parting out an old Chevy car." And it gave me an email. So, I emailed the guy last night and he replies this morning. I ask for photos of both top and bottom of body and lid. I also state that payment will be via US Postal Money order. He replies with 1 photo and a $200+ price. Well me being the "tight ***, skin flint that I am, said pass. But inbetween these emails, I asked @bucket to see if there is anything fishy with either of these names.
Bingo and sure enuf there was. And @bucket dished out some "boot".

Honestly, I didn't have any true indication that something was a-miss until I read this thread and afterwards was when I reached out to @bucket.

These ba$tard$ are really slick. And I'm a suspecious bugger and almost got burnt.

It's also worth noting, that anything you post is searchable via the net. I've done searches for topics and specific things to see it bring me here as an option, and including my own posts. Not certain if relevant.

See the price the man's asking for an air cleaner? Just a friendly suggestion for you guys pulling all your O.E. stuff. Some guys from California came to the shop, buying as many O.E. air cleaners, intakes, etc. as we could scrape up so people could make their cars legal again, and of course so these guys could make some cash. But if you pull your original stuff off, stick it in the rafters, the shed,a corner of the basement.

I’ve not had a problem here, but when I first had an instagram account, I almost got taken by a guy selling a dash pad that was too good to be true. Turns out you can find out how many times an Instagram account has changed their name. I went back and looked and this person had changed names 10 times.

One of the biggest red flags is when they send pics. If all of the backgrounds are different and no consistency, then they’ve just harnessed photos off the internet.

I did something I would tell everyone else not to do, and luckily it all still worked out, which is nice. I have had a set of stainless Hooker headers posted on craigslist and FB for a while. They are for the 88-98 trucks, I had them on my '81 C-10 for less than a thousand miles but the driver side one just barely touched the frame when hot causing a vibration, so I swapped them out. Evidently these headers are now discontinued. I listed them for $300, I had paid over $900 new in 2018 or so. Anyway, I honestly forgot I had them listed, and get a text asking if I still have them, and will I ship them. Here we go.

I say sure, if you wanna pay shipping for 2 big heavy headers. So the guy says he's in Tennessee, and I am in Massachusetts. I said dude I don't feel like getting scammed today. Well that began lot of texting and picture sharing of trucks between us. He was real, and a very nice guy. In the end he paid (Paypal) the $250 to have UPS box them and ship them, plus my $300, he really wanted these headers. So sometimes, just sometimes, not a scam (but rarely).

Right, but when they are responding to a wanted ad in one place and want you to correspond with someone else via email... they are a scammer. There's no other reason they would want to conduct business that way. Unless they happen to know someone local to you and you can conduct your business face to face.

Agreed! Face to face with cash is what I always say. I was just sharing one I expected to be a scam but chose to entertain that worked out.
