Your not supposed to get liquid gas in the canister, just vapors. Something is allowing gas from the tanks through the lines into the canister. On my truck, the selector valve hung and allowed gas from one tank to be pumped into the other until it was full and then into the vapor lines into the canister and all the way up to the carb vent and into the carb. Once you find that and fix it, you can get a new canister from RockAuto cheap and fix it right.
