The middle belt will slide too. Most seats come with a metal clip to secure the belt to itself. Looks kinda like an "H" iirc. Might b clipped to the bottom of the base of the car seat.

I don't think the seat belts in my old truck have the ratcheting function.

My '85 does and if I recall, my '79 did too. You just have to pull the belt all the way out. When it returns, you should hear it. I do remember some vehicle not having this feature, That's when we used the "H" clip in the previous post.

Any seat is safer than the old arm bar.
I don't recall having a child seat but I do remember taking many an arm bar to the ribs.

That’s what I was going to say the car seat came loose or the cars seat? If anything the car seat would have protected the child from the seat “crushing” the child. Something some were or multiple somethings weren’t done properly.

As far as I understand the factory strap on the car broke. One side held then let go and child and seat flew out the front window that popped out. Landed face down on a pile of rocks and killed instantly. The 30 lbs of seat strapped to the child certainly helped cause the harm. A slow roll over but the car slid over a 5' embankment and landed on the passenger side of the car, then rolled once completely. The jarring lateral forces is probably what broke the strap.

Early 50's ,Mom and me in the 48 fored 2 door sedan , left hand turn, me in front by Mom. Right flies open ,I'm sliding toward the opening. Just about to go out Mom grabs my shirt collar and SAVES me!!! probably a 25 mph corner, but we were in a hurry, I think(been a while ago). Just a seat belt woulda been nice! Still remember that like it was yesterday, scared the .... outa me and her, too!!!... could be why I don't care for foreds!!!

Take the seat and the truck by your local Police Department or a hospital. Most will have a person trained in installing car seats properly and can advise you of the best way.

I would think that having the car seat in the middle of a burb(like my 91) would probably be as safe as any car on the road today. The weight of the suburban, the placement of the car seat would mean more safety for the child - maybe not so much for whatever you hit or hit you, but physics is physics
