Worst part about the 88ups was the ****** brakes. The 88 I had was 50k miles young and had pretty much every brake component replaced threw warranty with GM parts and they still sucked and that’s why I sold it. I’m not sure if it was the ***** rear ABS or what. My 99 Tahoe was fine still miss that sumbitch.

I've got an '88 k1500 as my back up daily. 189,000 miles. It's as dependable as an anvil. I'd drive it anywhere.

Yeah, my Dad's 88' K1500 always had super mushy brakes. Never could get them to have a decent pedal.

The triton should have been called trident as in the gum because I think that’s what they used to hold the valve train together and to hold the exhaust manifolds on....just saying lol

The 3v, absolutely. The gen 1 2v, I disagree.

I've had two 2v with serious miles and abuse and they held up well. I then decided it would be a great idea to get a first year 3v in 2004 F150. What a nightmare. Between $750 spark plug jobs to a complete front cover job (chains, tensioners, phasers, etc.) at 100k, then a complete reman motor at 200k, what a pile of crap. The only thing that's held up in that truck is the tranny at 225k going strong.

Ford should have been put out of business for that screwup. But no, they outdid themselves with the 6.0 powerjoke.

For full disclosure, I have one of everything, in no particular order.

2009 'Burb - wife's rig of course she gets the newest of the fleet
2004 F150 - my aforementioned cause of many sleepless nights and massive amounts of money
2001 Dodge 1500 - surprisingly been very dependable. Had to replace the tranny at 115k, but that's sort of expected with a Dodge
2000 F250 7.3 - tough, dependable, great truck, chiropractic adjustments required after driving
1978 K15 - plow truck, workhorse, beater extraordinaire
1984 K10 - future resto
1969 F100 - another future resto, my grandpas last truck bought new

Now, as you can probably tell I'm not brand specific. I do think there are models in certain timeframes that are better than other brands. The GM 5.3 engine is one that has held up well and been around along time. However, as much as I like the GM 5.3 engine the one in our 'burb drinks 1.5 quarts every 3,000 miles. No other issues but that's not normal. The reman 5.4 Triton pile of crap started drinking oil after 5,000 miles. About a quart every oil change and its only got 15k on it. When we had the 78 K15 TH350 rebuilt this summer the mechanic remarked he had built his entire shop around rebuilding TH350's in the 80's.


They all have their problems and planned obsolescence is evident if you hang on to any vehicle for more than a few years.

You never heard of the Triton 5.4 blowing spark plugs out of their cylinder heads during normal operation like, idling...and destroying the cylinder head in the process?
I have a buddy that happened to one time but I know he's not the only one..

It’s not just the triton trash the 3.5s and 3.7s do it too let’s make the plugs 3 inches into the head and tell people that they are good for 100,000 miles. That’s because they know nobody will own it that long and will never change them. My wife has 13 Edge 3.5 I did the plugs at 60k it’s at 105k now you have to pull the intake off to get to the back 3 ......stupid

The big, little one. That truck was around a 2004? I heard a story once about a plug blowin out through the hood!

It's a trap. If the owner never touches it -or has it corrected- they get to buy a head. And maybe a hood.

If you REALLY think a spark plug is good to run 100k, you probably deserve it.
