Yeah I hear ya. It kinda makes sense that a truck of that size would benefit better mpg with a larger, more torquey motor. It has to spend less energy to get up and go therefore using less energy.

With regards to talking my wife into things with regards to vehicles it's kind of a give and take. For her vehicle she has to have something larger with the 4 kiddos. She dislikes minivans almost as much as I do so a burb is what we have. I only wish I could have gotten her to like a square or gmt400 burb but that wasn't happening  then with what I drive at the root she just wants me to be happy with what I drive as long as we can afford it. So I like my 98 a lot. Just wish it was a CC for when the boys ride with me :) I just like the GMT and square body styles much more than the newer trucks (although the 14+ silverados are good looking IMO) so I hope to stay in that body style in future DDs as well.

Part of the reason why I want is because of the unloved Olds Diesel.

I'll admit that it would be cool to have, mostly just to show off a clean example of an uncommon truck. But there's a reason they are uncommon, they were weak and not intended for normal pickup truck type use. I think hauling groceries or furniture or whatever would be about it.

Something to think about if/when you get to that point... From the reports I see, don't be afraid of going with a big block. The guy that sold it from underneath me had a 350 with 3.73 gears and got about 13mpg. I have heard of guys with big blocks getting up around 15mpg with 4.10 gears.

It depends a lot on the driver, but yep, highway mpg is about the same and of course the BBC has a lot more grunt. The downfall is city driving while unloaded, the SBC will have better economy there usually.

Or there's the possibility of dropping a Olds 455 in there...

Careful, that's a touchy subject. If HotRod sees that, he might get all sad and touchy feely.

It better be, until '76 that was an Imperial model before ChryCorp Axed the marque. Damn good looking car, too bad its a Mopar. Looks like it like it would have to come with a felatious girl riding shotgun for ultimate luxury.
