i will agree on the slider pin in the rear, the one bracket bolt is also hard to access, couldnt use torque wrench on it had to just use a wrench and hope i was closeYeah, I know about lubing the brakes and the slider pins. But the rubber boots that seal them are often no match for road debris and salt spray that can be blasted up under the truck.
Also, having to take the brakes apart all the time just to lube the pins is a royal PITA. Especially the rear, where a pin is often blocked by the leaf spring. Annoying brakes are not desirable brakes, imho.
Its not an all the time thing, if you live in the midwest such as i, you can do it once a year and be overdoing it
but that is assuming youre using it on the road and not submerging in water (boats) or heavy debris kickup , lots of dirt roads or off road id suggest more often because of lube will just get rocks stuck in it which can maybe fall into the surface and be gouged into the rotor or just debris fill up the slides
If you have good rubber boots from gm and not cheapos for the pins, they should handle it
But if youre using a squarebody with properly done brakes, it doesnt rely on keeping out debris to function well, and while you could probably lubricate the things they are touching metal wise for noise .. im not sure that youd get any benefit from their function.
Do the half tons use floating calipers or fixed on squares? If i remember right, something like my 80 k25 is fixed ? Its been a long time lol
I definitely support the staying with the stock brakes but going through them and making them up to snuff, but would endorse rear brake upgrade if the OP wanted an axle , because the right year 1500 axle in the gmt400 or 800 can give you a 14 bolt semi float with nicely sized brakes, nicely sized drums that would be improvement over the stock, id doubt any modification would be super needed to get them to work with truck
The fronts being the 2wd limits the choices for sure but rears that can brake more without locking will show value
