Since we've been wanting to move, my wife has been wanting a boat. Well, now that we've moved and I finally got a job, got to talking to a guy at work and he was selling his pontoon. After searching FB marketplace his turned out to be a really good deal. Most on FB around here are 16-20 footers and they're asking $10-15k. Picked up this baby for $5k! Then we ordered $5k worth of carpet, seats, and a top. It'll be a brand new boat when I'm done.

It's a 1989 Riviera Cruiser FunDeck 28' pontoon with an 85 Johnson. I don't know much about boats yet, but he says he ran it up until last summer. He bought a pool and his kids don't want anything to do with the boat now, lol.

That's a long boat! 85 Johnson is a good motor. Run pure gas and some Sea Foam Pro.
My ebay boat got up to retail with repairs too. But always wanted a bass boat!

Rebuilt pretty much the whole thing. Tore it all the way down. Put all new marine grade plywood down, and new carpet. Wife wanted all new seats and 2 bimini tops, so here it is! I still have to do all the wiring and get it fired up. Got myself a comfortable captain's chair as well. The only thing I didn't replace was the rails and console, lol. Oh, need to build a sundeck too.

It's really nice.
The mid engine SBC with a direct drive and a shaft sounds cool though.
Get it running well with the Johnson and plan to drag race it when it quits?

Not sure how I missed this thread before now, but looks like you did a good job on the rebuild. We loved our toon when we had it. I wanted something more, and the wife didn't want anything, the pontoon was the compromise. Since then (14 years later) we're on our 3rd boat, and one I don't want to get rid of.
I had a 90hp 2-stroke Mercury on our toon. Not too bad to work on at all, and pretty simple for anyone that has a little know how. I can't wait to see pictures of your toon out on the water in about 6 months!
IF you get really ambitious, try buffing out the pontoon logs (only need to do the outside, and about 5 feet in on the inside of them, then put some SharkHide on them. I did that, got lots of compliments, and it lasted probably 5 years before there was any noticeable fading/hazing. EDIT: the picture below was about 7 years after the SharkHide treatment.

Not to hijack... but here's a picture of our toon the day we sold it.
