I once had the opportunity to pick up a free boat that didn't include a trailer. I had visions of tying it to hitch on my truck and giving all my drunk buddies rides around the yard on it. Unfortunately, the wife's words to me were "absolutely not".

Maybe you could live my dream for me

Sometimes wives can really ruin a "good" idea.........

So for curiosity sake, what usually goes wrong in the lower unit to cause it to need to be removed?

Water pump impeller, which is a maintenance item anyway. But usually it's the shaft seals that fail and need to be replaced. If you catch it soon enough, which should be easy because maintenance includes annual gear oil changes, it's usually only a seal change. If not it ruins the gears. Other possible reason is impact with submerged objects. That one should be easy to spot.

There are tons of video's on how to rebuild lower units and other stuff on older outboards. I did mine (having never done it)....simple enough.

That makes sense. Ok new question lol, what could I realistically ask for three outboards? I have a 70 HP Johnson, a 75 HP Johnson, and a V6 evinrude. No idea on the HP rating. I was thinking $500 each? I would also trade all three for something.

check the compression on each first and google for correct #'s. Then go from there. You being in NC....should sell pretty quick unless they are toast.

Before covid, I think you could get $500-650 for a running 25HP 2 stroke tiller motor. You've got a lot more there. Be well worth your time to learn a bit about outboards to see what you've got so you don't get screwed.

look up similar models in that HP and year range on FB market place and craigslist. Be a good start.

I once would up with a "free" boat, an 18' HydraTrail. My neighbor was cleaning up his adjoining property and ask if I wanted the boat. I didn't want the boat but wanted the trailer so he said he would let me pull the boat off and sell me the trailer for $50.00 but if I took the boat with it it was all free. Even threw in the titles to everything! So wound up with this jewel in my yard and luckily I didn't get caught up in the trap off trying to fix it up, I had no interest in the boat but my BIL wanted the 150HP Mariner motor on it so we did some horsetrading. I took a Sawzall to the boat, cut it in half and hauled it to it's final resting place with my Square, and wound up with the trailer I wanted initially. And still have the nice Marlin 30-30 I got for the motor. Wound up being a sweet deal all the way around!!! Good luck with yours!!!:smoke2:

That type of boat is called a "walk-thru". The center of the windshield swings back open and you can "walk thru" to the front. I looks like a '70's model of something. I don't know much about that kind of boat. People use them a lot down here to ski behind. And a V6, you'd be hauling a**! Gee as lite as that boat is you could easily get up to 45mph. or higher. But these lakes down here are recreational and have speed limits. And if you get stopped by the "lake patrol"...just put it this way, you'd rather not get stopped. One open can of beer and everyone goes to jail and they impound the boat. The laws on the lake are exactly the same as city streets or the highway, worse. And you better have a vest for every person to, or that's another big ticket. Since these lakes are purely for recreation the laws are just like on city streets but worse. I suppose it's that way everywhere though.

It must just be in your area?

Ok final decision has been made. This boat will be scrapped. Motors will be sold. I was talking to my wife this morning about this. After the baby gets here and we find out how much daycare will cost, we will consider a boat for me. A Jon boat, like I really wanted to begin with. So there we go.

Academy used to sell John boats. I had a16 ft one with 25hp mercury on it and trailer for 2k. Pretty sweet deal. I used it for a year or so then sold it for 1500. This was 15 years ago tho.

Excellent decision in my humble opinion. Baby first, boat later!!:smoke2:
