I like boats ! To start with , grew up on the lake .
And oh yeah BOAT stands for bust out another thousand ..
the best 2 days of owning a boat , is the day you buy it , and the day you sell it !
But it’s how bad you want it .

We first noticed the SS Minnow in 1978. We were just returning from a 3 year tour in Okinawa, headed East bound on CA Hwy 58, to our new assignment at Nellis AFB in Las Vegas. Thought it was neat, as it showed someone still had a sense of humor. The ranch structures and the boat itself burned in a brush fire in July, 2012. We drove through last year and noticed the hull was completely gone. Another desert oddity lost to the ages!

Thank you for your service, sir. The street view date is 2018, so I think someone had an old boat to put out there to replace the old SS Minnow.

Its going to cost a lot of money and take a lot of time to get it even close to being able to safely float. You would be time and money ahead to buy one in good(or even decent) condition. There is a premium on boat parts, just because they are for boats... so any time you think about how much a part will cost based on the equivalent car part, just double or triple it and you'll be close.

And if you get stopped by the "lake patrol"...just put it this way, you'd rather not get stopped. One open can of beer and everyone goes to jail and they impound the boat. The laws on the lake are exactly the same as city streets or the highway, worse. And you better have a vest for every person to, or that's another big ticket. Since these lakes are purely for recreation the laws are just like on city streets but worse. I suppose it's that way everywhere though.

The safety check gear is a no-brainer. However the whole, targeting any boat with an open beer thing, cements my decision that I'll never live in Louisiana , if nothing more than that sole statement!
Of course BUI = DUI. It's that way everywhere, however I don't frequent lake **** cop lakes and if that's all that existed, our boat would be someone elses!

We have one lake like that, it's literally the nicest and closest lake to the house for an easy day or a quick wakeboard or surf set. But the local 1 horse 3 cop, makes half their revenue on speeding tickets also has full time water enforcement. Went there once.
Totally legal, legit, registration, safety gear, current water cop inspection sticker from another local lake, had a bunch of little kids with us. Mostly tubing and kids swimming. Got checked 3 times that day. Same cop boat, 3 different cops.
First one, no problem. Second one, I asked don't you keep a log of this ****? Barney already made me pull out 11 life jackets, air horn and fire extinguisher. Third time....kids plug your ears....**** you, your town and your lake!

As with the stupid safety/warning labels, this has become a thing because of all the ass hats that ruined it for everyone else.

As a first timer into boating, this one is probably beyond your skill set. I tried something similar many years ago and the thought of floating on the lake, fishing, and drinking beer kept my wallet open far beyond the point where common sense should have taken over. Stupid me, I worked on the hull first and took the motor to a mechanic after. Asking him to do a tuneup, he looked it over and finally said “Son, that ain’t a motor, that’s an anchor!” I never did get that thing in the water and had to call in some favors just to get it hauled away. After that experience I set more realistic goals and took on the Coon Toon project.

Besides a hull in questionable condition, the fact that there’s no trailer is a big deal. Around here, any road worthy boat trailer brings at least $1500. The motor has issues as well, I’m betting the impeller went bad from sitting and that’s why the lower end was removed. If it was a simple matter of clearing the ground, why wasn’t it just tilted up? Every outboard I’ve ever seen can be tilted up higher than the bottom of the transom.

Looking at the big picture, bc78 didn’t say “I’ve been wanting a boat for a long time and this one is available.” It’s more like “I wasn’t looking for a boat but my dad wants this gone.” IMO, that’s not enough reason to start throwing Benjamins down a rat hole.

I was meaning warning/safety labels in general, but I can see what you mean in the boat world alone, too.

Growing up we were on boats many times during the summertime. The adults consumed a large amount of beer while trolling. When grandpa would take us on his fishing trips, he'd let us have one. Had to keep it on the down-low, but it was cool. No tickets, no accidents, just fishing with the grandparents, enjoying some suds, fried chicken, hard-boiled eggs, and whatever else grandma made for the trip. The fish we caught, grandma would prepare them and oven-bake them, man that was good eaten!

i have had boats in my life from the start .thear will be days when you love it and days when you hate it .as long as the good out number the bad all good .it is going to swallow money at an alarming rate .but hay whot forum are we on isent throwing money at old bukets trying to reach the jewel at the bottom whot we do ! .DO IT WHO KNOWS YOU MAY LOVE IT . do it well cos if you dont like it you can sell it .personely id never be with out a boat .as for the wood get rid of it use composit materials will never rot again drink beer with ya mates whils fixing it up you only live once !

Well, I should say that I’ve wanted a boat for a long time, just not this kind. I really want a 16’ Jon boat with a small tiller motor. A “river boat” if you will. They tend to be low maintenance, easy to store, and less time consuming altogether. Plus they are geared more towards fishing, as am I. I’m not one to take everybody and his brother out for rides, I’d rather just take my son or one close friend out fishing.
