I really don't know the science behind it all I know is if you take a Cucv pickup in park and go underneith it you can turn the driveshalf like two Inches each way

To check that the F/R axles have matching gear ratios:

Get the truck up on so that all 4 wheels are clear of the ground. Mark the front and rear tires with chalk at the dead bottom. Lock the hubs, put the T/C in 4H and the transmission in neutral. Climb under and manually spin the rear axle drive shaft. Do it enough so that the wheel make 3-4 full revolutions - the exact number is not important.

Climb out and observe the chalk marks. If the axle ratios are the same, the front and rear chalk marks will be in identical positions.

Thanks for this, I'm so glad I checked before engaging the front axle. After rotating the drive shaft 3-4 turns the mark on the front tire is now at 3, the rear is at 9. This sucks!

I have to assume who ever stole the 60 out of the cucv, just had the dana 44 sitting somewhere, and we all know dana 44 never came with 4.56 gears

They are available aftermarket though. I have a 44 with 4.56 and 10 bolts with 4.56 and 5.13 gear ratios.

I seriously doubt it. You think he took the money from selling the 60 and bought 4.56 gears for the 44?

if I was NedFlanders I would pull covers and see what your working with

The gears are available after market. I'm not saying has them I'm just saying it's possible to correct the situation fairly cheap.

Yea looks like I can get a 4.56 ring and pinion set for under $200, or would I need to replace the carrier also? This is all new to me, never tire into an axle before.

But is it worth it since when done I still just have a 3/4 ton axle on a 1 ton truck?

The stock carrier on a d44 is good for up to 4.88.

Actually, I take that back. If I remember correctly, there's a break on what carrier will fit. The factory carriers that were numerically higher, you could run up to 4.88. I can't recall what ratio the break point is at for the lower ratios.

4.11 and down. Then 4.56 up. Or you can get a thick cut gear which is a 4.56 up gear made for the 4.11 down carrier.

I thought the break was below 4.10.

Looks like I have 45 teeth on the ring gear, and 11 on the pinion. So I guess my ratio is 4.09 correct? After reading a couple posts about gear swaps changing this to a 4.56 sounds like something best left to the pros since I have no axle experience. Any idea what a ballpark figure would be for something like this?

for the price you should go out and find a dana 60 from a cucv with 4.56 find a m1028 with a trac loc!
