Has anyone ever taken the transmission oil cooler out of an old radiator and used it as a cooler by itself?

I do not see how it would work. The factory cooler works by heat transfer to the coolant. You won't have near the heat transfer using air.

If you buy a separate external cooler, look for a stacked plate design, not a serpentine tube if you want best cooling. Long Mfg Low Pressure Drop (LPD) and the B&M coolers use stacked plates, and I’m sure there are others.

It looks just like a stacked plate cooler. The one I have came out of an '85 Corvette radiator, it has four stacked plates that are about 1 1/2 inches wide and the whole thing is just over a foot long each end has the flared fittings that are visible outside of the radiator.

A half inch tube in the shape of a coil. Uneventful. Looks like a curly fry from Arbys. Can't comment on the taste.
Not even close, there may be ones that do look like that but the one I have is like a stacked plate. I'll get a picture of it and post it later today

This makes sense, mainly because there is not much space between the flat tubes and that is exactly why I asked the question. Thank you.

Here's the pictures of the cooler I was asking about. I am having a hard time convincing myself that it won't work. It sure looks like it would to me.

It's not going to not work. It just won't be very effective. It's better than nothing, but if you're going to go to all the trouble why not put in a proper cooler and get all the benefits.

I know. This one was free.
