I bypassed the relay on my '78 so that the window switch on the dash would work at all times. All I did was plug a jumper wire into the factory connector for the relay.

I wish I would have done the same to my previous Suburbans. It's very convenient.
I could use that orange constant hot for that?

I don't remember exactly, but yes it was a factory relay with a steel body and it was mounted way up high, behind the dash.

I may have a picture if I dig around enough.

Can't attach a .pdf but, the relay was controlled by the ignition up to '72. It was discontinued in '73.

A bunch of Suburbans built after '72 say otherwise?

My 73 has it. Or if a previous owner added it he did a damn good job

Well, I have tried but I can't attach a pdf file. Tried to convert it to a word file...no go. Text file...nada.
Sorry.
I even tried sending them by PM...nope. Shoot me a PM with your email and I'll try to respond with the pdf.

Here is the factory installed relay in my '78, and the connector that I bypassed to give constant 12v to the dash switch:

How it works is, the relay gets a constant 12v (red wire) and it is self-grounded by being mounted to the brake pedal mount. There is the little wire (pink/black) that gets IGN 12v and energizes the relay, sending 12v (orange/black) to the dash switch.

I simply connected the red wire directly to the orange/black wire.

I just realized, there were not even power tailgate windows on Suburbans prior to '73.

Self grounding....I had a feeling that’s where it all went wrong. All I can get at the auto parts is plastic.

You just have to run a separate ground wire to use a standard type relay. Up above the left kick panel and behind the dash, there should be a set of ground terminals and you can just utilize one of the extra ones. Then you don't even have to drill a screw hole anywhere.

open the document, hit "PrtSc" or similar, its next to F12 usually, and then paste in the textbox, it will send a screenshot of your current computer screen

I even have a picture that says otherwise :)
