But he also said if he takes it out of gear and puts it in neutral at 70mph or whatever speed he hears it, the noise goes away. If it were u joints, it would still make that noise since there spinning in neutral or drive at speed.
Sometimes sticking u-joints will only make noise while loaded.
But they also make a high pitched squeak and normally will produce a pulsing squeak at even very low speeds, based on road speed. Not the whining, whirring type noise similar to a PS pump, like was described in the first post.
