89 350 tbi problems

OK, so my truck I have now has been sitting for 5 years.
I did all new filters and fluids all the way around, fresh gas, took the tbi unit apart, replaced gaskets, truck isn't wanting to crank.... Now it once was running because I got it to my house...

Engine has 20k miles on it, crate motor ho 350 dad put in it...

Can anyone give me some tips to check?


Motor will crank and run sometimes, but if I pat the gas the slightest bit, it stalls out and dies.
Can't figure out why it's not wanting to run?
Fuel pressure possibly.... New fuel filter, and it WAS running like a Champ a month or 2 ago.
What gives?

Dad said fuel pump is AC Delco replacement. I can't see why it would be the issue....
But it could be.

If it will run on starter fluid, the fuel pump may be dead. If it still doesn't run, check for spark.

I forgot to add that, I put a all new iginiton system.

So maybe fuel pump?

I can't understand how it was running not that long ago and now it quit...

I guess I'm going to replace the fuel pump since I'm having such issues.

EGR is stuck on it, but that didn't change anything pulling it off the 87 I have next to it

I’d get a fuel pressure test kit from Autozone, tee it in at the fuel filter spot, and make sure you have the right fuel pressure. You really want 12-13, but I wouldn’t make a big deal out of 10 or 11 (at least until absolutely everything else is exhausted). Like Andy said, fuel then spark. If it’s a spark issue, it sounds more like a pickup coil, but I wouldn’t discount a failed ICM either. Check injector spray pattern.

sometimes you can whack the fuel tank with a rubber hammer and jar a bad pump into action. Also when I had my shop we checked a bad pump by shooting brake parts cleaner into the intake system at an easy place, less volitile than ether. .... Sort can't spell volatile.

Headed to parts store for a fuel pump...
I can pour fuel into the neck and it'll run no problem...

Also runs on brake cleaner...

Definitely fuel pump I guess...

Called dad, he said it was last repalced in 2003....
There's my answer lol.


I made this post because I thought maybe something else was at play like emissions **** or vacuum lines...

I hope it has an electric pump on it. The TBI needs more than the mechanical pump 6 psi. Also check the O2 sensor.

That’s a while. If it sat for more than those five years since ‘03, the sending unit might be all rusted out from sitting with ethanol fuel that varnished. Same for the tank. Also, if you’re not in a rush, that stuff is considerably cheaper online, and I’m using the Spectra pump/sender with good results. I have the Spectra (sender only) in my car, and it’s also worked flawlessly. For those who find the pump baffling is destroyed and the tank’s rusted from sitting, they sell a tank/strap/pump/sender kit that’s a money saver.

Edit: as many times as I've replaced fuel pumps, you'd think I should just SMELL the symptoms of a weak pump

I've got an Edelbrock E-Street TBI and it needs 59-68psi minimum.
