So here is the the solution there are about 8 clips that are pinched into the aluminum trim. The clips are adhesive backed and then stuck to the tail gate. The solution is to use a putty knife and break the adhesive bond. You could pop the trim from the clips but are risking damage to the aluminum that would suck to repair
