You non EFI guys should take your carb jets down a step...factory carbs are really fat.

im squeezing 12 out of mine but i got it almost leaned out so much i might risk burning a exhaust valve

I doubt that Dawg. If you have it leaned out that far you'd get into a lean misfire first and it wouldn't run for ****. You'd know if it were to lean.

He may have it leaned out at idle, where engines are always at their richest, but as far as cruising he needs to get inside and bump the jets/metering rods down a step. Too many people think that they are tuning their carb by manipulating the idle mixture screws.

Very true, and all that mixture screws are for is idling. Mixture screws are nothing more than vacuum leak plugs cruising down the highway and most people are not aware of that. Yeah, I'd imagine you're right. He's just leaned out at idle, but still no worries of burning of valve was where I was going with that.

Yup...Jake, run the screws out untill it gets smooth, and the rpm drops amtad, then run them back in maybe about 1/8 to 1/4 turn....just a little Chevy Shake is what you want.

no shake in my truck it runs great and starts in 1 pump even when it is around 35-38 degrees i noticed a decrease in black smoke at idle and the exhaust smells normal now.

what helped my carb was a new choke thermostat it is a pot mounted on the intake and connects to the carb via linkage. and every fill up a can of berryman B12 chem tool in the tank.

So you've got a choke stove type. Seen that on a 73 model this week here on the forum.

Nothing beats a good working stock setup!

yea, i figured as much but that truck sold anyways. My chevy is in the shop getting the carb tuned as we speak and just found out that it has never been touched and its best to install a rebuild kit soooo i best put a lock on my check book for now. :(

due to lack of maintenance.

In most cases, but there are some not so good OE choke systems. I love the idea of a hot water choke, where you got the tubing that goes into the manifold and heated in the intake then transfers the heat to the choke on the carb thru the tube. Those systems usueally did not work so well. If they did work, they also stayed on for to long.

I sure hope your mechanic guy is a TRUE carb builder or sends it out to be done right if he doesn't have the tools. Qjets need the plugs epoxied and the throttle shafts need bushed.
