700r4 problems

fluid has to be checked with engine running and in Park. cold will be lower than hot on the dipstick, but the dipstick should be appropriately marked.

You see, I know fluid is measured hot, that’s how I added the fluid. But checked comd it was half way up the dipstick. Started truck and it’s maybe a pint overfill. Why’s the fluid so much higher cold?

I can't remember if you are 4wd, but check the transfer case fluid....there is a seal between the two that can leak. although usually it overfills the transfer case from the transmission. Mabe it is going the other way?

I think cold and engine not running fluid is way up the dipstick because of what Matt69olds typed above.

engine running for a few minutes and Cold should be lower than hot. because I the fluid volume expands as it heats.

potentially you overfilled it a little adding cold fluid to a hot transmission? but just a little overfill probably won't hurt too bad....

In 2010 I worked at a GMC dealership and that seal sharing fluids was a common problem.

Not sure on the seal but the tcase and trans have been separated more recently than not, there’s blue silicone between the two. I added fluid slowly when I added it, shifted up and down through the gears, I added roughly 2.5qt since it didn’t even register on the dipstick after letting the engine fully reach temp.

I'm guessing it's over full because when you added it it was probably still cool because it's hard to get it to full operating temp with out driving it around. How long did you warm it up for?

Probably a good half hour, I had moved the truck, not like highway speeds or anything but I drove it around the yard. I’ll try and take it for a test drive tomorrow and see if it’ll shift

Put the blazer in 4L and took off across the property. It stays in first until I let off then it went into ? Some gear. Didn’t seem to return back to first on its own but I also didn’t come to a complete stop. Put it back in 2H and took off down the road, open headers screaming didn’t shift, let out of it and it just revs and you can feel a slight pull. Pull in somewhere drop it to first to pull up an incline turn around put it in 2nd and take off for home, revs then let off and goes into whatever gear but doesn’t pull. I didn’t think to check the speed I acquired in first but it didn’t pull after it shifted it must’ve skipped a gear or something. I thought it went to neutral but if you stayed in it for a second you could feel a slight pull.

could be filling up the transfer case. pull the fill plug on the transfer case and if fluid pukes out, that's where it is going.

Would that be causing my trans issue? I know the seal between the tcase and trans is blue silicone if some sort. It’s newer than older. It’s still clean it hasn’t been there a very long time, thats the only thing I’ve seen so far that backs up the “fresh rebuild”

My only thought is maybe because it sat for so long. Maybe torque converter is filling slow ? Idk, Check transfer case first to be sure thats not where its going. If it were me I'd say keep filling it as it takes it and keep checking and test driving. What do you have to lose?

A 700r4, lol, I bought a 88 k1500 today because it’s got a “good” 700r4 in it but the accessory bracket on the front broke the two bolts at the power steering pump. I wrapped rope around the crank and water pump and drove it around the yard in 4L to see if 4x4 worked, that’s where I got the idea for 4L to see if trans would shift(the k1500 shifted to second in 4L incase you were curious 4x4 didn’t seem to work) but it’s got 206k miles so it probably won’t last forever. I just want this thing driving, I got reducers today to put some exhaust on it and I’m ready to start daily driving I just need it to shift. After adding the fluid esrlier and letting it idle it seemed overfull, afyer driving down the road it was back down. Somehow during just sitting there the fluid goes up, driving it fluid goes down?

Check that breather on the bell housing. My friend lost a chevy to an engine fire because it was plugged from a mud dobber, going down the road fluid shot out of the dipstick tube and caught fire on the headers.
