that particular transmission was rebuilt about 3 to 4 years and about 20k miles(previous owners) before the failure. Was in a 1990 suburban that a friend of mine bought. The worst part was that he noticed it was leaking a bit, but we did not replace the seal in time. It managed to keep going about 100 miles in that state and was still driving around before pulling it out.(but definitely noisy) We put the old transmission from my 89 trans am in it for couple of months so he could still drive it while getting the transmission fixed.

Wow... then that trans surely didn't last long. I know a suburban isn't very light so it does push the trans a bit more, but still... 20k isn't jack.

This time around I guess it'll be done right!

You are an exception, unfortunately. Even my local builders aren't that bad. I'd expect at least 30-40k... but a quality job should last a good 100k at least, IMO

I agree, Dale at Dales Transmission in Hesperia CA did the filter/fluid changes, oe trans lasted around 75k, he rebuilt it with a shift kit etc. and it was still fine at 200k, when having the local college r/r the engine, I had him rebuild the trans "heavy duty" since he was retiring.
At 214k, engine down with sick #3 intake valve, the truck sits by my front door where I look at it daily and dream about it running someday with a new engine.
Super honest good guy, I occasionally wonder how long this HD build will last, finding an honest and good mech out there can be a challenge.
Reading about this and all the input was great, hope it turns out well for low to no cost for him.
That kind of HP/TORQUE ? <~~~ 8p...one might need some serious support in drive line parts.

Looks it was 87 that had both the rainbow & taps... not 89. Here's a unicorn. So this had a Aux VB then.

So that might just be the Unicorn I'm talking about. I read 1 time they existed, and have looked for one ever since. But I'm glad you posted that. Now I know I didn't lose my mind and the Unicorn does in fact exist. And nice to know, that it too does have the rainbow, cuz I didn't know if it did or not. That will help me when I'm trying to identify one via Craigslist pics.

I just love it when women post porn. I'm saving that pic to my hard drive. I'm naming that file Unicorn700r4 in my My Pics>Automotive>Transmissions>700r4 folder.

How many cores do you keep around Cuba? Any in particular that you don't save?

I used to pass on the 82-86 cores, but I even take those if they're haul off or cheap enough. Reason being, by now many of them have been upgraded to Beast or Smart Shell, so you're going to at least get that in some cases. Also, some guys look for those older pumps for making non electronic lock up converter units. That's another thing new to me. Haven't had any reason to get into that, so I've not done any research to know what, how or why to do it.

As said, I knew to keep an eye out for them, but I was really beginning to think they did NOT exist and whoever wrote this book or article I read that in was full of ****. So it appears they weren't.

But I still wouldn't be surprised if they were intended for GM 700r4 R&D team for troubleshooting and improvements then they ran the rest of them until they ran out before they changed over the tool and die at the ..... (WTF, mind drew a blank, the factory where blocks, heads, cranks and castings are made. What's that factory called?) Dammit, I hate when I can't think of a word.

The odds are so against it, if you have one, I'd go buy a Powerball ticket for tomorrow night. I've named them Unicorn 700r4 for a reason.
