I was just driving my 84 k20 with a turbo 700 r4 and I was doing 55 and steeped on the gas and the rpm went up to about 4000 and it would not go any faster and then I pulled over and tried to go again and I couldn’t get it out of 1 gear I was just want to know if i need a new transmission

Probably. Sounds like your band is shot (it's applied in 2nd and 4th gear.

First check your governor - make sure the gear isnt stripped.

If the governor is in good shape and gear is fine, drop the pan and see what's at the bottom. Lots of metal or burnt clutch material is found, put the pan back on with a few bolts and yank it for overhaul.

If nothing remarkable is found, air check for band apply via the little exhaust hole on the pan rail surface, just underneath the servo. If the servo applies, the band itself is likely burnt. Yank it for overhaul.
