I think my 2 door K30 was ~5300-5400 lbs when weighed for state to state transfer. I’d assume the extra couple feet of door and frame would take you around the 6000lb ballpark, maybe a touch more.

They aren’t as heavy as most think compared to the pre-aluminum newer trucks. I had a crew cab long bed Cummins that was ~8800lbs. Now the new 1-ton trucks are back in the mid 6000s. Good for payload, but you need to put them in 4wd before parking them when loading a mini excavator or skid steer or the ass end will get so light the truck will slide forward. Don’t ask how I know...

Ok yeah I was thinking around that number. I just did a 5.3 swap into mine because when I bought it the motor was gone and a found a killer deal on a 2003 yukon for cheap that I couldn't pass up. My issue is now that she is a bit under powered so trying to now look at my options. I have lots of ideas in mind just need to pick one haha

LS motors are great, but they (esp 4.8 and 5.3) feel like the peak torque is at a higher RPM. Not ideal for a truck. What’s the gear ratio in the diffs and tire size?

Yeah what would have been best was getting 6.0 but one wasn't available for a good price when I did mine. A 6.0 is still an option of I can get one for a good price. It would be a direct replacement. As far as gears and tire it have 4:11 with 35s but im actually thinking of putt and smaller lift with 33s since its kind of a pain to get in an out of especially for my wife and kids. Yes I know 4:56 would a better option. But it's out of the question because it has a th400 and it like to be able to drive it on the interstate.

33's with 4.10 would be roughly the same as leaving the 35's and going to 4.56 gears, which you said isn't ideal.

You've already done the LS family swap, so in theory, you could swap in a 6.0 faster and cheaper than messing with a gear swap, or a new lift/tires. Then maybe add some steps and grab handles to make the family happy.

If it were mine, I'd swap in the 6.0 with some upgrades. Then add a Gear Vendor overdrive so 5.13 gears would work on the highway well. Then I'd tell the wife and kids to get used to climbing

I was at the dump today and on the scale. My truck empty (without me) weighed in at around 6200. 454, dual batteries, A/C and the full truck box.

With regards to gearing/tires/etc, my truck has 33's (32.8") with 3.73's. At 65-70 I'm turning about 2500 RPM. My '79 had the same size tires with 4.10's was closer to 3000 RPM's.

My '78 P30 Itasca motorhome has 4.56's and 235 85 16's (31.7" diameter) and it runs around 3200 RPM's at 65 mph. TH400 transmission.

I like @bucket 's idea of finding a 6.0. THEN turbo that. :headbang:

I suppose I could start a thread. I posted a pic a while back, maybe on my suburban build thread showing the motorhome.

According to factory specs on the 1981 K30, the curb weight was listed as 6264.
