I wasn’t able to see if anything was already posted on here discussing any issues in regard to towing capacity with NV4500 mounted to a 454.

The wife and I are getting ready to move again (military orders) and we’re really considering purchasing a RV. I still have my 1981 C30 Crew Cab and I’m curious to what exactly is the “max” towing for 5th wheel or trailer?

The 5th wheels that we’re interested in are approx 9800 lbs - 12000 lbs. The trailers are much lighter, but if we’re planning on living in it for an extended period of time, then the extra room would be beneficial.

Any and all feedback would be appreciated.

What is the tongue weight of these 5th wheels?

There are a lot of factors such as how “fresh” your trucks bushings, springs, tires, etc are, how it’s equipped (springs, brakes), how often you plan to tow this load, and your level of comfort towing.

If you stick to the realm of 10k or so and are mindful of tongue weight, you should be good to go.

I have no idea about the towing capacity with that engine/tranny combo, but as posted above the “pin weight” of the 5er will be the big hurdle. Factory weights on trailers are as they are right off of the assembly, no propane, batteries etc.. then also plan on about 1-2K lbs worth of your stuff too.
Over load springs and/or air bags will probably be required.
I pull a 13K 5er with an F-350 dually, it CAT scaled at over 22K lbs fully loaded for a 2 week trip.

As far as the engine and trans are concerned, if the engine isn't tired, it will do the job just fine. It won't have the power of a modern turbo diesel or an 8.1 gasser, but it can do it. If you are going through the mountains, you'll probably find yourself in the slow lane on the steeper inclines. But that brings up another point... brakes are going to be a top priority going back down the hills. Well adjusted brakes as well as a good brake controller are mandatory.

This is right from the GM specs for an '85. I'm sure yours are the same. C30 gross trailer weight with a 454 and a 5th wheel kingpin type hitch is listed below. The specs I have are for an automatic (TH-400) and it doesn't say anything about dual rear wheels or Camper Specials. Either I didn't print them for a manual when I found this info years ago or GM didn't include it.

Tires LT235/85R16
Gears Gross trailer weight
3.21 7000
3.73 9000
4.10 10,500
4.56 12,500

Max GVRW - 9000 LBS
Max Payload - 4250 LBS

First and foremost from one vet to another thank you for your service. Where are you coming from and where are you going to? Trailer brakes are an absolute must. I just pulled a 25 ft flatbed with a full sized 10000lb truck with mine last week about 100 miles. It was just fine. But stopping without a good trailer brake would have been a little bit hairy. A fifthwheel or gooseneck camper trailer would be awesome. you and your wife would already have a place to live the second you land at your new duty station even if its temporary until you find a house in your price range. Most bases have large parking MWR parking lots that you will be able to park a large camper in for only 30 to 70 a month once you find a place as well. Good luck on your PCS and be safe brother.

The NV4500 will have no problem with the weight. Not knowing the status of it (newly rebuilt/ needs rebuilt/etc.) you will want to address the 5th gear nut issue. The issue of it backing off is most prominent in towing situations. There are solutions but don't ignore it.
