1984 C10 305 w/manual tranny.
As purchased the truck has a very worn Edelbrock 1406.
Throttle shaft and bore so worn that it sticks open when running unless I really put the tension to the return spring.
Really makes driving with a manual tranny a pain........

So, I seek suggestions as to what to put on top of my 305.
It is currently stock, but I have headers and new pipes to install.
Someday maybe better heads, cam and intake, but not for a while.
Maybe I'll go with a 350, just not now.
I wanna drive it now...........so.......
Stay Edelbeock 500cfm or Q-Jet ?

This is the set up I put on my 82 sbc 305. I bought the level 2 Quadrajet from national carbs. It's tuned to run with intake and headers. I still have to install the headman mid length headers. When I fired it up after installing the Edelbrock performer and Quadrajet it runs much better than before. Much more responsive now. If you go with the intake and Quadrajet make sure you get the adapter plate for a Quadrajet or it will not fit on intake.

Thanks!
Do you have the part # for the carb?
The standard is a 4478.
I am not familiar with the term "Level 2"

I have found a great deal on a Holley Street Warrior, but it is a manual choke.
600cfm and virtually new.
I am thinking.........

Throw away the Edelbrock and go Quadrajet. I’d call Mountain Man Carburetor and Quadrajet Power and see what they had already rebuilt in stock. Then see how much you can find a rebuildable core for locally and compare. I cannot see you being into a like new Quadrajet from one of the cottage rebuilders for more than $300. Mine was $200 plus shipping to rebuild, but I already had it.

I'd just replace it with another #1406. Hey wait, the 500 cfm #1405 would be a better option on a 305, and costs around $30 less.

You could also get a refurbished Holley 600 (usually a brand new return) from Holley's eBay store. https://www.ebay.com/str/Holley-Performance/Carbs-4bbl-Vacuum-Sec/_i.html?_storecat=10228505

Models to consider are the #80457 variants. SA = aluminum, S = shiny silver that turns gray. And the #80570 570 cfm carb would also work. But you'd need to modify your fuel line and possibly throttle linkage when going from Edelbrock to Holley. And if you have a semi-spread bore manifold like a Performer 2101, you will need this adapter plate under the Holley to seal the the the edges of the secondary holes on the manifold.

Carbs are basically opinion, at 305 levels none really work better than the others. Whatever you're comfortable with and can get parts for is what I would recommend.

That's a great deal on the Q-jets from National Carburetors. I was expecting to see $450 or more. Ah, now I see where they add a $75 core charge and $30 for shipping. Still not bad if they do the job right.

1405 and 1406 are both 600 CFM. 1405 built for performance. 1406 built for economy.

I wound up with a Holley Street Warrior factory refurb off ebay for $229.99 including shipping and a 1 year warranty.
I received it in 2 days and it appears to be virtually brand new!
It went right on and started fight up.
Couple of idle adjustments later and all is well......
This was just the least expensive and quickest means to an end.
@600cfm it should handle anything I want to do to the 305.
If I go larger, I may need to get a bigger carb, but that'll be down the road...........

Good score! My truck has a 80457SA 600 carb that I bought at Holley's eBay store 4 years ago. It's one of the best carbs I've ever had, almost up there with an old school 80783C 650 I ran for years on another vehicle.

Yup. 80457S is what I purchased.
The only spot of bother was fitting the fresh air intake for the PCV system to my Edelbrock air cleaner.
The carb is so long that I had a hard time finding a place to route the hose that did not interfere with linkages, bowls, auto choke, etc.
I finally attached a 90° copper tubing elbo to the nipple on the air cleaner base and located it in about the only location I could: immediately aft of the auto choke mechanism. It heads right to the rear rocker cover hole from there.
