1980 k10 gas gauge

My 1980 k10 gas gauge is stuck at just below half a tank. I have read a lot of threads about this, but they all have dual tanks and my 2nd tank has been removed. Could missing the 2nd tank be my problem? If thats not the problem what would cause this?

a lot of times the ground on top of the sending unit will get disconnected, either from rust or just falling off. Not saying that's your problem just telling you its a common thing
