I finally got my 327 installed in my 1979 C-10 big ten. Hoping to get the drag strip next week and I have a few questions for the experts.

1. 350 non air, turbo 350, 12 bolt open rear end, typically what gears could this truck have?
2. Does anyone make light weight drag race wheels for this 5 lug truck, I want 15X3.5 on the front, and 15X10 on the rear?

Check your SPID label in the glovebox. The gearing code is something like GU*. That’ll tell you what it came with originally, but that may not be what it has now.

That sticker is gone. Surprising the truck was fairly virgin, and the rear end is original, I do plan to build another rear rear end for the truck, and then I can call it done. I just hope theres not 3.08s in there, which will be counter productive to the 13 sec time slip I would like to see.

I’m curious why you decided on a 327?

Good question: Because we were in the middle of building my sons 302 and had bought several virgin 327 core engines, I DO NOT like nice virgin GM engine cores to go to waste, or just sit around and never do anything with them, and I wanted my 14 year old son to understand what its like to build something out of old discarded parts most people would never use. Now was it a good idea to use a 327 for a performance truck build-not so much, but the truck is cool!

Mr. Jones is pretty well known for making power. Lots of BBC Chevy powered hot rods with engines built by him. And several informative YouTube videos if do search.

Good luck on the build!
I checked out the video. Looks like a healthy amount of tq from the 327. I have one in my garage. I think I’ll borrow his specs some day.

I was able to weigh my 1979 C-10, with no driver it weighed 4040 pounds, big ten long bed, turbo 350, iron headed small block, factory wheels, no air conditioning. It also has the 3.07 rear gear.

327 can be a pretty good drag engine
They spin up to high rpm quickly

My brother had a built one in a 76 4wd

Remove the lake pipe covers to Uncork the headers , put it in 4-low and best a corvette or mustang
