Can anyone tell me where to get all the ID numbers off a 12 bolt rear end. Trying to figure out what I have. I am not sure if it is true but I heard 82 was the last year that they put a 12 bolt in. I just bought my 85 and it has a 12 bolt in it. The only numbers I have found so far are GM84 and 3896839. I know there are more numbers I am just trying to locate them. Axle needs seals hence having the hard time finding the numbers. I am about 50% done scrubbing down the axle housing. Hopefully tomorrow I can finish it up. Any help would be great. Anyone know what the numbers mean that I have already.

Axle seals should be axle seals for a 12 bolt mine is of unknown vintage and I just got seals for a 76 and they fit. I’m accually not being a smart ass (shoosh some of you) just no need to over think it.

I will finish scrubbing it down today. Figure I am under there I might as well just pull the cover it is about the only true way to see what I have. I was just trying to figure out the year of the axle.

You could pull the seal and get the number off it and besides you gotta pull the cover to get the axle out anyway. So no harm no fowl.

I thought that '79 was the last year for the 12 bolt to be installed (from factory) in these trucks.
