So I have a stock block '73 454 that I'm going to put an "RV" cam in and I have a set of 360 heads and a set of 049 heads. Which would be the better set to use for a work truck motor and why?
In my opinion, I'd go with the 049's. They are factory to the 73 year model. Going to probably be higher compression and certainly bigger intake port runners compared to the 360 which I'm pretty certain are peanut port heads and low compression too. The 360 if they are indeed peanut ports are good for nothing but low end grunt and fall flat at 4,000 rpm or so. The 049's should breathe a lot better and give good performance up to 5,000 rpm or so. And going with the RV cam designed for low end grunt, should work well with them.
That's just my opinion and assuming the 360's are peanut ports and the O49's may not be. You should be able to see the difference just by looking at them as to which has bigger ports and smaller combustion chambers.
