    Changing gear ratios: opinions/suggestions wanted!!

Well, to complicate things - you could swap in a Tremec 6 speed. Just sayin. The 700R4 was the transition from the TH days. It has an overdrive. A good builder can beef up a few parts that made it fragile. Note: It has a TV cable. Super important to get that set right. The successor was...

    2 piece driveshaft needed

Well.. the young guy I hired to help out in the shop somehow tossed my driveshaft in the dumpster. My truck is an 1985 1/2 tom GMC 2 wheel drive. Long bed. 700R4 transmission. Anyone have one or a lead on best place to order?

    HELP! My truck won’t start!

If you are 180 off, the thing won't run. If it is running well, then just leave it. if not... No1 and No6 are at the top of the compression stroke when 1 is at TDC. Just fyi. the firing order is 1 8 4 3 6 5 7 2. NO1 is left bank - first hole. left = driver side. 1 3 5 7 on that side. The...

Distributor will hit edelbrock 3764 intake

you can move the distributor one or two places on the cam gear. Set the engine at TDC on the compression stroke, move the distributor, note where the rotor is, and make that post number 1. next one clockwise is number 8, and so on.

    85 GMC Engine Wiring Questions

I'm about to begin the arduous task of wiring up my Frankentruck. What was sold to me as a 1985 is actually an '81. (I had a cop friend run it to make sure it wasn't hot). Never have I ever seen a more effed up hack job on a wiring harness. I swapped in a SBC - fresh build with a carb - no...

    Potential wiring problem

I'd check that repair you made. Also, you can always run a new wire - of course getting to that cluster sucks.

Welcome from St Louis. That Terrible Broccoli Indigestion (TBI) was truly awful. What's Your plan with the big block? Huge torque potential.

Small Block choices: A feller has too many

Update: of the 3 blocks I had, two were cracked. That made the selection simple. Ended up .030 over, 400 crank, 6" rods, 64CC new style aluminum heads with 2.02 intake valves, Erson cam, hydraulic roller tappets, KB Hyper coated pistons, Edelbrock performer RPM intake, Holley Brawler... Final...

A very expensive and dumb mistake (update I was wrong)

If the delta is too large, you might go to a 2 piece drive shaft. Take up half the offset output shaft to carrier bearing, and the rest carrier to diff yoke.

Welcome from St Louis Missouri. That's a nice truck. So much from the engine bay can be deleted!

    First time "real" painting.

Welllllll..... Let me say that I know how you are feeling. Last time I painted, Jimmy Carter was president. And it was simple. Prep, prime, prep. tack. shoot. Not so much any more. I just painted my 85 GMC - let's just say I painted most of it twice. A good sealer is a godsend. Then...

Spark plug gap closed fresh rebuild

Don't know exactly - but north of 175 psi. Take out all plugs. Crank on each cylinder with the tester installed, let it pulse 4 times. you should not see a variation of more than 10% hole to hole.

Spark plug gap closed fresh rebuild

I would not run that engine until you diagnose the problem. Make sure that plug is the same as all the others. Pull the other plugs and do a compression test on that cylinder. If you have a borescope that would be something I would do first. if it is the correct plug, and like all the others...

Small Block choices: A feller has too many

#3 block and the 64cc heads it is. Block and heads headed to the machine shop Monday. There's .050 piston to deck clearance which is too much. not going all the way to zero deck but probably .o10 to .015. Hardened valve seats and threaded studs and a valve job. I'll port the heads on intake...

Small Block choices: A feller has too many

UPDATE: Option 1 is FUBAR. See pics. Crank has been cut .010 already and is scored again. 3 cylinders are cracked. I magna-fluxed them and, well, you can see the result.

Small Block choices: A feller has too many

Hi All, For my new square body project, Ive got choices. I have 3 engines in stock, none of which I know much about in terms of history. They all rotate and appear ok-ish. Number 1 Block casting: 3970010 Heads: 3973487 - some research shows 75 CC chambers I just started...
