I am going with retro sound. I don't need to watch movies while I am driving. I prefer to look at the road.

Fixing up my 1985 Chevy Silverado & wanted to share

Nice write up. $3-5000 is cheap. It is mostly labor as you found out. Most shops are $125-175/hr around here for labor. It adds up quick.

How does this sort of thing happen????

I have been in the car business for 40 years. I have been technician, shop foreman, dispatcher, manager and owned my owned shop. I know hundreds of auto technicians. Are there some less than honest ones, of course. What people don't realize is the customers are more dishonest than anyone. They...

    Loose timing chain replacement

Here is what the new chain looks like for reference. The chain and gears are original to this engine. I have owned the truck since 1988. Original cam gear was aluminum and had nylon covered teeth. GM did that to make the setup quiet.

    Loose timing chain replacement

No there is no chain tensioner. I installed my new chain and gears today. You need a puller to get the crank gear off.

Lost Two Gen 3 LS Engines in my 1986 C10 2WD

Used engines are fine. I didn't mean to insinuate all junk yard motors are no good. I meant the engine was in the junk yard so don't be surprised when one has an issue.

    Chrome bumpers comparison ?

There are a couple chrome places left not too far away. They mostly do industrial plating for some of the defense contractors in the area but do advertise "show chrome" for automobiles. I am sure the show chrome business is more profitable.

Lost Two Gen 3 LS Engines in my 1986 C10 2WD

Doing a compression check on a junk yard motor is not possible but you can do a leak down. On your failed engine you should do a leak down so you know what the failure is. These engines are in a junk yard for a reason but two used engines failing the same way? Whatever you swapped between them...

    Chrome bumpers comparison ?

maybe, maybe not. I need to look at my bumper again. I could always just send that out for a rechrome. I am concerned the new bumper are junk. The original bumper is pretty clean and straight. I hate to get rid of it and be disappointed by repro garbage. I am at the body shop tomorrow working...

    Chrome bumpers comparison ?

I have an original chrome step bumper. There is one hole in it from where the original owner had mounted a small trailer plug. Maybe I should just polish this and see how it looks. It is not rusty or bent/dented. The area where the towing ball would mount is grey and not chrome but not rusty...

    Loose timing chain replacement

Here is a video of my timing chain. 1987 7.4L engine. This is way too loose. One side will always be tight. Rotation put all the slack on one side.

    Tv cable

I will do it for $8400. I will even give you a hug after. I all seriousness I would use a local shop if they are price competitive. Jasper offers 3 year/100,000 mile warranty. Parts and labor on their remans.

    Chrome bumpers comparison ?

I need a rear chrome step bumper for my 1987 V3500 being restored. AMD does not carry them. Anyone have a suggestion for a decent one?

    Loose timing chain replacement

It is a 305 not a race motor. Stick with standard chain type. It was good for all these years, why go through the work and cost for no benefit?

    Loose timing chain replacement

I am about to replace my timing chain too. Mine is on a 7.4L but it is the same design. As was said above, turn the engine until the two dots line up. Then remove the cam gear bolts and cam gear and chain. Remove the crank pulley. Install new parts in reverse order. Finger tighten bolts then...

    Hydroboost - Hard Pedal

You do have it plumbed correctly? If the fluid is aerating it may actually be overheating. Do you have a p/s cooler?

You can use a heated O2 sensor. You will have to wire up the heater circuit but that would not be hard to do.

    Buying a rebuilt transmission th350

My V3500 has a TH400. Original transmission cracked a year or so ago. It still drove and shifted fine. Just leaked like a sieve. I tried to find a used unit to rebuild but people wanted too much so I bought a rebuilt unit.

    Buying a rebuilt transmission th350

Your transmission is not having issues? Then do not touch it. Clean the pan, fit a new filter and fill it back up. Why fix something that isn't broke. Who needs more crap laying around for "just in case"?
