No power to gauges, no headlights, no speedometer, and no reverse lights

Get a 12 volt test light, ground it to a known good ground. Verify the light and ground is good before going any further. Turn on the ignition, check for power on both sides of the gauges fuse. No power, or power on only one side of the fuse will determine the next step. Do the taillights...

    Charge an extra battery

I have the battery on my trailer wired thru the 7 blade trailer plug, into a 10 gauge wire protected by a 20 amp fuse. My trailer sometimes sits for months, so the battery will be low when I use it. The truck has never failed to charge it, and it’s been wired like this for the last 10 years...

    TV Adjustment

Step one, make sure the throttle opens all the way with the gas pedal. Sometimes linkage flex, floor mats, etc will prevent the throttle from opening all the way. Next, make sure the TV cable throttle travel maxes out at WOT. If so, take it out for a test drive. You might need to adjust the...

Looking for recomendations for transmission change

If the trans is built right, I wouldn’t hesitate to run a 700 behind a big block. There is zero reason a 700 wouldn’t live behind a stout small block. The BIGGEST killer of a 700 is the TV cable. It HAS to be right, close isny good enough. While it’s true the TV cable travel needs to be maxed...

    Calibrating speedometer.

They are color coded, but unless they are new gears it’s best to count teeth. They tend to discolor after 30 years in trans fluid.

    Vacuum advance adjustment

Read this: https://www.jegs.com/installationinstructions/200/270/270-99600-1.pdf What you’re suppose to do is find the base/mechanical advance that the e gone likes, and thenn move on to the vacuum advance.

    Vacuum advance adjustment

Read this: https://www.460ford.com/threads/timing-vacuum-advance-101-good-article-by-gm-engineer.117504/ The 34-36* rule of thumb is good for max power at WOT, you can get away with a lot more timing at cruise. Your vacuum advance canister might be fine, or you might need to tweak it a little...

    4L80E Rebuild Recommendation

I have bought lots of stuff from Jake. His stuff it top shelf quality. Extreme Automatics is another good place to deal with. In all honesty, 700hp is nothing to a 4L80. Use Jakes calibration kit, pay attention to the clearances, it will live a long time at that power level.

    1979 Big 10 Engine & Transmission Upgrade

A 7.28 1/8 mile is 11:30s in the 1/4, I’d say you hit your mid 11s goal pretty easy.

95 Chevy Caprice transmission quirks... suggestions?

If it’s a quality refurbished valve body, it should have all the updates done to it. I guess it depends on who you get the valvebody from. In either case, be sure to get the plate.

95 Chevy Caprice transmission quirks... suggestions?

What’s fluid look like? It definitely sounds like valves on the valvebody are sticky. As long as the transmission isn’t slipping, you might be able to fix it with some valve body work. Order one of these 2 shift kits. The SK kit is what a lot of shops call the Jr kit. The more expensive kit...

Opinions please on possible use for zinc oil additive

Magnetic drain plug?? Try 5W30, maybe that will help the start up noise.

Opinions please on possible use for zinc oil additive

I would think any engine made in the last 15 years would be fine on low zinc oil. I would especially think a generator engine would be perfectly content on just about any quality oil of the proper weight. Those aren’t high rpm engines, they basically run at the same speed. I bet the valve...

    700R4 Speedo Issue

The terminator controller is what everyone recommends, it’s the next step up. The Dominator setup is the top of the line, with the top of the line price tag.

    1985 4x4 700r4

How many miles since the rebuild? If the 1,2, and 3 shifts are normal, with no other issues, put the shifter in 3rd gear, drive the truck at a speed well beyond where it would make the 3-4 shift, and put the shifter in 4th. If it shifts, upshifting/downshift a few more times. If the valve is a...

How to test torque converter lockup solenoid

Technically, you need a non lockup valve installed in the pump to maintain the correct amount of fluid to the cooler. If you study the hydraulic circuit, the lockup valve restricts the amount of oil that goes to the oil cooler. Since probably 85% of the heat generated in a transmission comes...

    Holley issues

Have you verified the float level is correct? With the sight plug removed, you want the fuel level just below the hole. If the float level is too high, it can flood the engine. Look down the throttle bore while it’s running, look for fuel dripping from the accelerator pump nozzle. If it’s...

    Somebody help a newbie!

Start with the basics. Inspect or replace the plugs, carefully inspect the plug wires. If they are in bad shape, replace them. Same with the distributor cap and rotor. Once you’re certain the ignition system is in good shape, make sure the timing is right. There should be a sticker under the...

    Holley issues

It’s probably time to just pull off the carb, take it apart, see what’s been changed and screwed up, and start from scratch. You have already said the accelerator pump is frozen and inop, it’s never going to run right like that. Find out what jets and power valve are supposed to be in it from...

    -speedometer

https://www.tciauto.com/speedometer-gear-calculator You need to know tire diameter, gear ratio, and either the drive or driven gear tooth count. This chart will calculate the other gear needed. Sometimes the chart says “no gear available” that means there is no gear that can be used with the...

Fuse question (what is this for? Empty on a schematic)

Found this pic online, you can see the pink pigtail that the power windows would plug into. The circuit breaker bridges the gap. If your truck doesn’t have power windows, they will be a blank spot where the jumper snaps in
  25. Matt69olds

Fuse question (what is this for? Empty on a schematic)

The blank spot is the power feed for power windows. It has a plug that snaps into the empty cavity, the power window feed connects to that. There is a 30 amp circuit breaker that bridges the empty spot. If something is plugged into the left cavity (where the circuit breaker would go) whatever is...
