    Dumb question time....88 Suburban tailgate

If that safety doesn't work(like mine), make sure the window is 100% into the down position before closing the tailgate - wifey decided my tailgate needed to be closed with the window showing 6" - I am still finding little pebbles of glass inside the back.

    Recommend rear wheel cylinder?

Once the Brake shoe/pad or clutch surface has any oil on it, you must replace them. No ifs, ands or buts. They soak up oil and then will not grip.

Best way to quiet an exhaust

Have the muffler shop put in a crossover tube, that makes the mufflers work together and it will quiet them up. Install resonators if that doesn't work, but you will have to move the mufflers forward first, so leave enough room behind the crossover tube to do that. The X pipe is better, but the...

    Timing and Dieseling

Is your timing steady? or does it shift a couple of degrees? If it is not steady, you need to find out why. It could be the balancer, the chain and gears or even the distributer. Many original distributors have worn bushings and can cause problems.

    Worse than expected MPG

What state are you in? Different fuel requirements, altitude, pollution control device tunes, etc, make a huge difference. That being said, squarebodies are not known for great fuel milage. A stock height 1500 suburban with OD (or a short bed PU)might get 13 mpg, but that is it. I remember a...

    Mounting to interior sheet metal

I think it would depend on what you are mounting. A fire extinguisher, speakers are one thing, a grab handle or a seat is another. A grab handle should be good for 500 lbs, your bubba buddy + G forces holding on to a bar should not tear out the sheet metal. A fire extinguisher holder or...

Well crap! Wife in a Car Accident.

I don't know how many people have told me that new cars were safer than my 91 Burb. I just laugh at them. I was hit by a semi entering the freeway while driving a 96 Honda Civic. I crawled out of it on the other side of the freeway after carraming off of 2 cars and flipping over. I still have...

    Are these mirrors standard equipment?

Outside mirrors on many vehicles are installed at the dealership. I have seen after market mirrors on new cars/trucks in the 70s, right on the lot. Trucks that were not for campers or were sold in mostly car dealerships got the same mirrors that the cars got.

    LS swap questions

If you watch the auctions from towing companies, you can usually find wrecked cars and trucks that you can assume were running when wrecked and towed. Most people do not have full coverage on older vehicles, so you can buy a vehicle that should have a running drive train.

    Replacing Frame Rivets

Maybe I am off base here, but bolts(or better studs with heavy duty nuts) is what they use in industry. Use a graphite on the side you may want to remove the nut at a later date. The graphite grease allows you to get a tighter fit. We used these on high temp areas, salt water areas, even on...

    Rounded off exhaust manifold bolts

Hammer on a 6 point socket after using the PB Blaster and tapping with a hammer. A 6 point should have more purchase, even if it is the wrong size. Using a 12 point on a rounded bolt or nut is going to make it more pounded. There are sockets and wrenches that work like an EZ Out, but the WD 40...

    Upgrading Your Blower Motor

If you live or drive through a Southwest desert in the summer, this could be great also. When it is 120F outside, it really sucks to have great cooling at the vent and no way to get the cool air to your body.

    Need obscure bearing

http://www.psep.biz/store/kohler_engine_parts.htm It has been my experience that bearings, brake rebuild kits, rings and even pistons can be found to work in many different applications. Why make a special bearing when it can be designed to work just as well with a standard part? IH trucks...

    Engine identification

The 348 was known around here as a boat anchor. Undo a rod at the crank and slip a chain through, bolt it together and you are good to go. The 348/409 were great pulling engines, but 5000 rpm was their limit. There was an outfit in the San Fernando Valley that machined them for a later model BB...

    Good trailer Hitch Receiver?

    Chevy Bodies style nicknames?

It is really hard to call these years by any special name. The '66 was on it's own, '67-'73 were the best of the bunch. The post war trucks had many changes and then changed completely in 54-55. The GMCs were quite a bit different from the Chevys back then, also.

    Trying to Identify this bumper.

Trucks were shipped w/o rear bumpers and mirrors, that was the task of the dealer's "new car get ready team". The bumper may have not been installed on some service truck because of a lift gate or other type of bumper that was used. Many auto dealers have these extra parts just hanging around.
