    Let's talk oil

There was a big run on the Valvoline,( that most were using), on Amazon. It was a small case lot and was priced very well , but may have been run-up (or sold out)by now. (2 or 3 wks ago)

That's not necessarily the reason as to why, but synthetics strongest suit is dealing with high or low temperature extremes, longevity, and cleaning ability.

    Let's talk oil

I highly doubt you could find a modern oil that would cause sludge, and formulas have been changed for the better in some/most ways and for the worse as far as flat tappet protection. The info and experience is all out there for those that want to keep up with it.

Can someone point me to threads on 350 vs 400 cid

I've seen too many problems with half ton rear axles in the last 15 +yrs, mainly starting with the obs '88 & up. Don't even have to be working the truck to have a problem. I've had to keep one ton trucks to do my work and they just don't have axle problems !

TravisB, I hope you're using a BIG trans cooler pulling those loads with 2.xx something gears ! Half ton ?? How are your brakes !?

    Let's talk oil

Nothing at all wrong with modern Pennzoil or Castrol. Neither will sludge an engine unless it's neglected. Penn Platinum is likely the best synthetic to be found outside of a racing or boutique oil, their conventional/dino oil is highly regarded also ! Flat tappet or racing oils are in their...

    Basic TBI mod success

Swirl port heads, same as '193 heads. More torque off idle than any other heads GM made ('193 & '191 - same). Less ignition advance needed than any other head also, because of the swirl vane creating so much mixture motion.

    Basic TBI mod success

The heads really are not the restriction , it's the tiny 166* cam (and any part of the original factory exhaust), but you cannot use much more cam with the original computer. The factory BBC TBI manifold adapter will let you use a regular 4 bbl manifold and not waste money on an exclusive TBI...

84 GMC C2500 Dies After It Warms Up

Exactly !! I have had it happen to me. Any application that has the divorced coil on the rear of the intake and in front of the distributor is susceptible.

    That's the weight of my '94 K1500 shortbed, with a 350 and NV4500.

    Cam decision

If you call 5 cam companies - you will likely get 5 completely different cams unfortunately. The World Sportsman II heads, (I have a set of them also), like as much lift as you can provide with all means possible in a streetable cam. This is where a roller would help,( if it's possible for you...

    292 cam in a daily?

If it is the cam I'm thinking ,( without the trouble of looking..lol), it is a single pattern grind and 230* @ .050 , and that's across the line for a smallblock as far as needing a stall. It will run like gangbusters from 2,000 and up. Needs some gear too.

    Let's talk oil

Synthetic can legally be Dino oil also, and likely are considering that's cheaper (or a blend thereof). None of the big Oil Co's can be trusted because the bottle doesn't have to change if they change their formula , and there'll be no public announcement declaring so. Several aren't as good as...

Lookup more info at ; www.BobIsTheOilGuy.com ("Molakule" has the pertinent info) It has stopped the cold knocking of my 4.8 on startup (260,xxx mi). This product isn't well known - yet, and not available many places, just Amazon and WalMart.

Use this REAL additive and you can use any off the shelf oil you'd like, https://www.amazon.com/dp/B002C6E0VU/?coliid=I26A782RZ34UXW&colid=1READJHQJE4XJ&psc=0&ref_=lv_ov_lig_dp_it I like to add a tiny bit of Moly, but you'd only want/& need a very small amount of zinc to be present. The...

    Cam Swap in Truck W/AC

Too late now, but AL heads will easily tolerate another full point higher compression than their iron counterparts. Likely even as high as 11:1 on pump premium and a decent street cam, depending how good the combustion chamber design is and a few other factors.

Those are excellent heads as far as power per dollar, according to a cyl head shootout yrs ago.

    Cam Swap in Truck W/AC

I believe there was a 487X which was like the older 461X vs. 461, larger intake runners. I consider smallblock heads to be either large or small chamber, vs smog or non-smog, but should really group them into lightweight vs heavy castings (new vs old ??).

    Cam Swap in Truck W/AC

Alot of cams out that will work fine for you, the Howards cam seems like it will also. I'll be using the smallest VooDoo cam in a much smaller engine. Same seat duration with more .050 duration and more lift. 207* / 213* @ .050, .437" / .454", 112* LS. You should consider a rocker arm upgrade...

    '82-'83 ? SPREADBORE Holley

The last "carbed" cars were Olds because they were clean enough up to that point without any further changes.
