Methods for getting steering wheel straight

Centering the steering wheel by adjusting the drag link is correct and is the last adjustment made when doing an alignment. The gear should be centered when the steering wheel is straight but this is assuming the replacement shaft has the flats clocked the same as the original, or at least real...

Methods for getting steering wheel straight

Good point Turbo4whl. I was assuming the steering box was center or close with the steering wheel straight. There are the stop bolts on the steering knuckles to consider too. If you just jump in the truck, turn the wheel straight and then count turns lock to lock, you may be hitting those stops.

Methods for getting steering wheel straight

4wd is easy, the tie rod setup that connects to the pitman arm centers the steering wheel. Just loosen the sleeve and turn one way or the other until the wheel is straight. 2wd you'd have to move one side toe out and the other side toe in equally. If you don't get them equal it will change the...

    Instrument Cluster and Parking lights

Usually you can poke a wire or pointy thing in there to release a tiny lock tab on the brass. Probably from the front.

    GMT-400 Alignment issues

All the ones I've seen must be installed in pairs at just the right rotation. The hole is offset from center so one side has way more rubber than the other making the bushing weaker on one side. They don't tend to last as long. Then, even if you do get the alignment right where you want it, the...

    GMT-400 Alignment issues

Those trucks just don't take well to raising ride height unless you do it with a real lift kit or sas. The offset bushings are kind of a hack. They can sometimes correct the angles but have their own issues.

After a few tries with the original, I did end up using the100mph speedo. Works fine.

No Start, Sputters, Backfires, has used ignition parts

If you had the distributor loose or out you will need to check and adjust the timing. Not sure if you're understanding the 180 out thing. The rotor only goes on one way but the timing can be 180 out depending on if you're tdc on the compression or exhaust stroke. The crank turns twice while the...

    85mph vs 100mph speedo

Thanks. I'm not sure if I'll swap it but good to know it would work. Mine is doing all kinds of strange things. I think I'll try a cable first. Or just clean and lube the old one.

    85mph vs 100mph speedo

Working on my dash because I don't have a radio and most everything else ain't working right. Had my cluster out to clean it up and replace all the bulbs and get the gauges working. Ended up digging some old clusters out of the garage for donor parts. I have a couple of the 100mph speedometers...

3 alternators in less than 6 months

Are you buying your alternators from AutoZone? Last one I bought there lasted @6 months. Warranty replacement lasted 6 months. Warranty replacement for the replacement lasted @6 months... AutoZone employee said "Why do you care? It's free." Pissed me off and I got a refund. I don't like fixing...

1986 GMC C3500 Frame Brake line fitting

The threaded end of the brake hose should go thru the frame. There's either a nut or a clip that holds it in place on the inside of the frame. Sounds like you have a brake line nut that's froze in and rounded off. Since you're replacing the hose anyway you should either replace the brake line...

    Steering Squeak

Looks out of line in the pic. Like maybe it needs a washer behind the bottom mount. Check it with a straight edge across the balancer pulley. Should be the same top to bottom and sideways.

She's got the shakes, need help locating the cause.

Next thing I would do would be to check the compression on all of the cylinders. Especially since one of the plugs you pulled was oily. Kinda sounds like you have at least one cyl not firing. The clank is probably something different. Good luck. Hope it ain't a cracked head, burnt valve, or bad...
