    4.3 smokes on startup.

As others have stated, almost certainly valve seals. They are cheap and easy to do though,. If you're mechanically inclined, and have some spare time, give it a go. Don't be heartbroken if it doesn't change too much. Those heads do a crummy job with oil control. Joe

    Chevy 6.0 with 4l80e

Because this seems like a great place for a debate, what oil should one run in that 6.0, and what is the proper break-in procedure? ;):)o_O

    Looking at car lifts

I own this one: https://www.gregsmithequipment.com/Atlas-OH-10X-EXTRA-WIDE-EXTRA-TALL I use the crap out of it. It is stable for 2500 trucks but if you're going to go any bigger then that get a 12k. I even stabilize the 2500s with post jacks if I'm going to be doing heavy work like an engine...

    TH400 help.

Before I dropped the pan on it I would take a pressure check to see wht it looks like in Park and when you drop it into gear. If it's making the proper pressure and still doesn't get drive then you're taking it apart. If it's low on pressure then drop the pan to see if the filter is starving...

    LS swap

I am in the same boat as you. I can't fabricate a thing. I just don't have the imagination for it. Thankfully you can purchase everything you need for this swap. It's a bolt in. I'm not trying to convince you to do it, because there's no wrong choice here. Just don't let the fabrication...

    New LS Tool

you won't be sorry you bought HP Tuners. It's a good program. Not perfect, but plenty good. Spend a little time building a good Speed Density Tuning template for the scanner, then get a wideband O2 and you'll be off and running. A year after swapping mine I'm still changing shift points...

    four gas analysis

It might need rings. Might need something else. You're probably going to have to take it to someone that can diagnose it. Joe

    four gas analysis

Most common on older stuff with only high HCs is burning oil. There's a few other possible offenders though. Not enough timing is common too.

    Steering Gearbox Blues

After several reman box problems on my Dodge Cummins I swore them off. The last one had obviously been in an accident and had a bent pittman shaft. That thing could have failed catastrophically at any moment, and they rebuilt it like that! I didn't even install it. Just returned it. My...

Front brakes lock up in panic stop

This^^^ It would be a problem if you can't lock your front wheels. You're most likely over-thinking it. Adjust your rear brakes so they're working correctly and see how it goes. ABS became popular because drivers (non-drivers really) without it would lose control of the vehicle in a panic...

    LS Swap AC Location

You can mount the compressor that came on the LS engine in the original location, but you'll probably have to make custom hoses. Thankfully they aren't expensive. You'll need Tejas mounts to make it fit. They move the engine forward and up one inch to give you clearance. Joe

Does the Ignition Module actually control the timing?

A long time ago a few of my friends and I debated the integrity of the aftermarket ignition control modules for GM and Ford vehicles. We had a Chevy TBI truck handy so we broke out the Sun scope for some testing. The GM 7 pin module had several timing steps in it. With the bypass wire...

700R4 hits 45mph then kicks into 1st gear

Early OD transmissions (700 and 440) didn't make good shifting decisions. One way to make them live longer was to not use OD except when at steady highway cruise. If either of those transmissions are toggling in and out of OD, you will soon have a bad transmission. Joe

700R4 hits 45mph then kicks into 1st gear

The 3-4 clutch pack is smoked. Maybe from towing in OD, but either way that is what it probably is. It's a very common failure on the TH700, and that is the exact symptom when it happens. If R, 1 and 2 are fine, but 3 and 4 are gone, dollars to donuts-that's what it is. Joe

Do we have a show us your shop thread?

https://www.gregsmithequipment.com/Atlas-OH-10X-EXTRA-WIDE-EXTRA-TALL I'm 6'4" and wanted something I didn't have to bend over to get under. This lift is tall. Tallest one that I found, so I bought it. I don't like it for anything bigger than a 2500 size truck. I use post jacks when I pick...

Do we have a show us your shop thread?

I saved a good while before I built my shop. I worked outside and on the ground for a lot of years before I built one. I did a 40X80. Front half is work space. Back half is storage. I keep enough projects going to keep me busy. Cars, trucks, motorcycles, minibikes, hit and miss...

    LS swap

I swapped my 86 C10. I've got 15k miles on it since the swap and I love driving it. Great manners and 500 HP in one package. That said, it's not cheap to swap even when you do your own work. The old small block chevy engines are still fantastic powerplants. I'd never go back, but I totally...

    1987 350TPI Missing

That PCM is not capable of seeing misfires, so if the CEL blinked when it missed, then I'd look to see what code is stored in it. If there isn't one, then check your ignition triggering - Module, Pickup Coil. Code 12 is one of the few codes that can make the CEL blink momentarily. If there's...

    Cab Swaps/VIN

Thanks for the replies, and great advice. I'll check with the local DMV guys to see what the official procedure is. I'm too old for ass-ache. Joe

    Cab Swaps/VIN

What do the guys do that swap cabs on a truck? Do they only buy a cab that some with a title? I sure wouldn't want to have my VIN checked by the cops or an insurance company and have it not match my registration. Joe

    Sway bar FYI

Most C10s were built without a sway bar. While I don't have production numbers to back that up, I'll say that I looked at 10 C10s being parted out before I found a truck that had one. Joe
