Frankenstein 454 swap. Overheating at idle.

Yeah, the stem for the cap is just a hair too tall. There is a nub on the hood skeleton (idk what thats actually called) that contacts the rad cap...just barely. How much "persuading" could I do with hammer or grinder with out compromising the hood integrity?

    Custom Console Build How To

This is an awesome write up. I am a carpenter by trade....my suburban has an old busted console thats not acrually for the truck. Idk why it never dawned on me to just make the shit out of plywood and wrap it. That looks awesome.

    Frankenstein 454 swap....hood wont shut

So.....i just swapped outbthe radiator and fans on my frankenstine Burban. The radiator is out of an 02 3500. Has plastic tanks, and the spout sticks up to high so the hood contacts the rad cap.....just barely. Any good threads on modifying your hood? Could I just beat it with my...

Frankenstein 454 swap. Overheating at idle.

Well, bought the rad for the 02 3500. Its short....but the fan shroud I bought out of the 05 Tahoe fit near perfectly. Took a bit of drilling and cutting on the shroud in order to get it to sit down over the steering box. It's a tight fit. But it fits.....and best of all...keeps this truck...

What would you do, if you were me?

If you do go the cab swap route....i would put a man trans in it. You wont have to go through the work of adding the pedal. With the truck already being in pieces the trans swap should be breezy. The cost of a good trans will be high...but adding a 5 speed to what I'm assuming is a 454 will...

Frankenstein 454 swap. Overheating at idle.

Found an OEM radiator for an 01-02 GMC 3500. Has plastic tanks, seems like the neck for the cap might be a little too tall? Idk

@Bextreme04 Think the radiator out of that 05 Tahoe I got my fans out of could be made to fit?

Well....turns out it has more than one hole Now that the big hole was plugged, for sure can hear more leaks from the core. This rad is shot. Smh......$50 more up in smoke.

Its a Frankenstein 454 w/ th400. Once ive recooped some of my $$$ I'm going to put a nv4500 in it and convert to TBI. Lol as she sits she is only getting about 5-6mpg. And thats rough for a daily driven work truck. Under "tech discussion" there is a thread detailing some of the issues ive...

I like the markers...a lot. Would look super cool on my suburban. Highly doubt that my local PD would stop me for red markers. I've got away with much worse. (69 Lincoln had greed turn signals) The previous owner of my burb gave it a half way decent rattle can paint job that is remotely...

    '91 Suburban Parts Help

My 83 burb has the split ambulance door...The mechanism that operates the passenger side has proven to be a bear to find. If you come across one in your searches HMU. I'll keep my eyes peeled for your window motor.

So...pressure tested the new old 1ton radiator prior to instillation. And its good I did. Has a good leak around the lower trans cooler port. Going to try amd drop some solder on it tonight and try again.

Awesome. I did get the propper size radiator. Its used, but seems to be in pretty good shape. It was originally paired with a 454 in a 1 ton. Got it for $50. Got coolant on sale at Advanced Auto for $8 a gallon. Lol things might be looking up.

Frankenstein 454 swap. Overheating at idle.

Could dual fans out of an 05 Tahoe be made to work with my new old radiator? Currently at pick-n-pull with one in hand. The plastic shroud is 34.5 x 20 and the fans are both 16" S blades. The fans plug in....i assume I could just snip the pig tails off and wire into my painless wiring...

Frankenstein 454 swap. Overheating at idle.

Found an "80s BBC 1ton radiator" on FB marketplace for $75. Appears to be the same size as the one I pulled out. Does anybody know if there will be fitment issues between a 1ton and 1/2ton?

Frankenstein 454 swap. Overheating at idle.

Got the overflow bottle pulled out and flipped So that its actually functional. I bought a new OEM one....but I'm pretty sure the batt is sitting where it would mount up. Looking for universal set ups. Would be nice to actually be able to see the coolant inside. Im def going to rip the baby...

Frankenstein 454 swap. Overheating at idle.

Im running a "painless" wiring harness for the fans. This truck has a dual bat set up and I think an over sized alt due to having front and rear AC. But I may be wrong. Looking at replacement fans....most seem to be labled in amps, not wats. Amps x volts = wats correct? Ive found some...

Frankenstein 454 swap. Overheating at idle.

Thanks for all the knowledge. I went ahead and added the plastic shroud back on. Had to be trimmed to fit. Then, I taped up the vents in the face of the shroud. Once it dries out im going to tape up the 1/4" gap on the bottom. Truck never got over 210. But the high today is about 45°...

Ive wondered about incorrect gaskets. But she really seems to run well. Temps stay at 185 constant when running down the hwy. Even at like 35mph she stays cool. I would imagine my over heating would be worse at speed if gaskets were the issue?

Ive done a lot of crawling around looking for numbers of any kind and have come up with squat. Im going to get it out of the snow this afternoon to work on it and I'll do some more checking. I'll bust out the Degreaser and a brush if needs be. But its really not all that dirty. I know the...
