    To be 100% EMP proof, it's gotta have a points distributor, like an old school Mallory dual point. I think you can still buy them along with spare points and condenser. I just happen to have one, but it doesn't have vacuum advance.

    Seriously, there's nothing wrong with an 8.5" 10-bolt unless you're running slicks. As mentioned above, I think axles are the weak link. If you rebuild it, go with name brand gears and bearings.

    On at least some GM vehicles, like my 82 C10, the choke wire was connected to its own terminal on the oil pressure switch. That was so the choke would heat up (and start to open) only when there was oil pressure, not just when the ignition was on.
