    How do YOU set timing?

Ya, I should. Or just replace it. My wife was sitting in the passenger seat and I thought about her reaction if it had started pouring coolant on the floor..... The nasty thing about coolant is it's hard to get out of carpet and padding.

    How do YOU set timing?

Oh ya I completely agree. And to that point about it coming in handy. I drove my truck 300 miles today (@Grit dog this ties into you) and the heater core is seeping a little. I just haven't found the time to change it and I'm hoping it'll last though September so I brought my hose pincher...

    How do YOU set timing?

Right, I've known guys that did that, and I've known guys that set timing with a vacuum gauge. I get it to some degree but you can also be pretty far off with those methods and if your running a loud exhaust you might not know it' pinging until it's to late. Even if your running a quiet...

    How do YOU set timing?

Everyone here has given you great advice, I'm going to add this. If you want 35 degrees total timing you should set that at 3K or wherever the advance stops going up in the RPM range. Once the engine is at idle check the base timing with the vacuum advance disconnected and take note of that...

    Towing with a 305 V8?

I would never advise switching to a Holley (or only very rarely) certainly not on a stock engine. You'll get a lot of opinions if you did a thread dedicated to that question, but the bottom line is that any flavor (within reason) of carburetor can be step and made to run your engine. However...

    Charging issue

I have little to add to the discussion other than no alternator is going to keep up with that load at 500RPM idle. If you wanna run that low of an idle go for it. But your not going to charge or will charge very poorly at that RPM. Your A/C if you have it will suck at that RPM.

1996 Grand Cherokee transmission rebuild & on to other stuff

That was what I was seeing as well, of course my grill is different than yours and I have a space below the bumper that would need screening as well. Thanks. I've used Purple power, which use to clean the shop floors and I hit it the brake cleaner. Dirt and grease is not the main issue...

1996 Grand Cherokee transmission rebuild & on to other stuff

I gonna do this. Might do it to all my rigs. How did you keep it in place on the grill?

    Found this at Copart Spokane

NO not a Washington state requirement I've bought cars and trucks at auction in Washington where I live.... That is a Copart rule NOT a Washington state law.... That's it, just what you said is all I'm aware of. I've bought at public auctions without an issue.

1996 Grand Cherokee transmission rebuild & on to other stuff

Sorry about the late update I got kind of side tracked after getting to the farm. Gotta cook dinner, put the birds away and then I spent almost an hour just sitting on the couch with Misty (our dog). Ok here is my after work update / progress. So I took the grill and top support for the...

    Double Dingo's 1991 Jeep Cherokee

@DoubleDingo Ya, but it's a flickin' Delphi those are suppose to be a good product at premium price! No I don't think so anymore. The last two or three years we have seen a good number of delphi units fail. We try to get Bosch pumps, but actually have had pretty good luck with the masterpro...

1996 Grand Cherokee transmission rebuild & on to other stuff

It is condensing liquid and that was my thought too that refrigerant level is likely ok, I just figured the machine could do a suck and fill to verify while I did the condenser clean. I just replaced the evaporator, and heater core so we should be good there. I went ahead and ordered a manual...

1996 Grand Cherokee transmission rebuild & on to other stuff

There is a road closed for 6 weeks between the shop and the farm whilst they replace a culvert, my drive is currently an hour and half.... It does work and it is better than nothing. I'm sure left on recirc after about 45 minutes it would be ok, but yea I'm not having this at all!

    Double Dingo's 1991 Jeep Cherokee

I never want to replace an intake pump whilst on a trip. But ya I'm right there with you. I try to carry as much spare stuff and tools as I can. My wife complains about it from time to time, but when we have a problem, she's always says something like "but you have a spare right?" lol.

1996 Grand Cherokee transmission rebuild & on to other stuff

Ok it sucks today. We have been having record heat hitting the mid-90's officially though I've been getting readings just shy of 100F both at the shop and the farm. I've driven my retro fitted 84 C20 all week and the truck has had no issues keeping me cool. The Jeep not so much. I drove the...

    Double Dingo's 1991 Jeep Cherokee

How frustrating. I had a run of bad pumps in my 92' Dakota around 2002 or so. What's worse I'd changed mine because it was extremely noisy and I wanted to avoid failure. Left me on the side of the road twice, died while driving, but times taking a hammer to the tank got it running again...

    Towing with a 305 V8?

@Velder Also keep in mind whatever the trucks legal GWVR is will not change after you make changes to it. If it's only got (for example) 2K left for towing and your running around with a 5K trailer you could get slapped with some serious issues if you were ever involved in a accident your fault...

    Towing with a 305 V8?

@Velder Yea, all of this is true about me. I will point out that my truck is a C20 not a 10 and there are differences and I would not feel or be as comfortable doing what I do with the 20. Yes, I DD it to the shop. I think Grit is understating the amount I haul with it, but I'd probably...

Agreed. There use to be a really great guy in the area, but he is now long gone.....

    Charging issue

I would recommend purchasing a new alternator and staying away from remanufactured. Denso or A/C Delco are always my first choice. I try to steer clear of parts store "house" brands because those are just names and it can be hard to tell who made it. With that said we have had good luck with...

I was going to say, bad ground or bad alternator, certainly installing your old unit will be a good test.

    Starter wires near exhaust manifold

Ya, I hadn't really thought of that, I could see that costing a guy an alternator and battery or even the whole truck.... gee you got lucky. Makes me want to go check my starter wiring!

    Towing with a 305 V8?

As a 2WD 84' C20 truck owner that tows occasionally I will admit this is a concern. I don't worry about it to much getting stuck on my farm most of my roads are good and the ones that aren't I just do the best I can and realize that I can get myself out of anything I get into.... On my place...

    Starter wires near exhaust manifold

A picture would really help. I think the biggest thing un my mind is if they are likely to touch the manifold like going over bumps they might get melted at that point, and over time the insulation is likely to get cooked. I'd take Scott's approach and just insulate them.

    O'Reilly sux balls !!!

Ya, and really at this point if I guy wants to buy from discount parts online amazon is a way better option. Ya, there cataloging isn't as good but if you know a part number or two and can plug those into the amazon search. Generally much quicker shipping and returns are a breeze.
