Need opinions: To EGR or not to EGR

I agree that the valve probably doesn’t open at cold start/idle but I think there would still be some heating effect - input into manifold is at front DS, but valve is at middle PS. But, as stated, this heating effect would be going on all the time, even when I don’t want it. I’ll probably...

Need opinions: To EGR or not to EGR

Cool, thanks guys. Still haven't quite decided what to do, but good that there are some options. Anyone have any experience with the vortec manifolds in a square? Will they fit without frame or other significant mods?

Need opinions: To EGR or not to EGR

Thanks some good ideas here. However I don't have an AIR system, I think that was only on early TBI trucks? So that won't work for an EGR feed. My existing manifolds also don't have any O2 ports, I think O2 is further downstream. LT1 manifolds are intriguing. Kind of similar to rams...

Need opinions: To EGR or not to EGR

Trying to decide if I should keep EGR on my vortec 383. Vortecs make EGR a little harder since they don't have exhaust crossovers in the heads. Trucks from that era got their EGR input from the drivers side exhaust manifold. Emissions in my area are a rolling 25 years old, the Burb is a '91...

No start: walbro fuel pump install

Yep, that fixed it, running great now. Can't believe my boneheaded move - the whole time I was working on this I realized the pump was polarity specific, I just spaced it when I put that connector back together and forgot that I'd have a 50% chance of doing it wrong.

No start: walbro fuel pump install

I think I’ve got the polarity reversed, will that cause the pump to spin backwards? Pump comes on when key turned to run but my pressure gauge at the TBI shows zero. Only other thing I can think of is I got the hoses at the sending unit (same size fittings) reversed but I don’t think so -...

TBI Fuel tank sending unit removal

Thanks - got it off. Yeah it’s just on the front side of the axle, pretty easy to get actually. Hardest part was the ground lead that’s connected to the frame above the tank. My 3/4 burb is tall enough and I’m short enough to sit under there to be able to see what I’m doing. Sent from my...

TBI Fuel tank sending unit removal

How do you disconnect the yellow wiring connector? Or maybe you don’t and have to disconnect those from below the tank? If so are those connectors in the drivers side frame rail? Got everything else disconnected and ready to pull it out of the tank except for the wires. Replacing my pump...

    383 Vortec/TBI Build Thread

Does anyone know the torque specs for that lifter hold down ("spider") plate? Loctite? Red or blue? The legs of that plate have to deform quite a bit to get the bolts to snug up. I was just going to snug em up with red loctite unless I hear different.

Yeah, I'm not sure if they were touching or not, but they were damn close. I'm sure there would have been problems, possibly right at first start up.

Thanks - Damn, I hope so. Putting the engine together is easy and low stress since I still have a running truck. Gotta make it not running for a while sooner or later though. I coach my kids' swim team and that starts up in about a week, going to cut into my shop time......

    383 Vortec/TBI Build Thread

Thanks for the replies. No worries on the pushrod joke - figured that's what it was. Yeah they're just vortec stockers. My machinist said they'd be just fine for my build so I went with them. I drilled out the pushrod holes in the heads - left them on the block when I did it. No offense...

    383 Vortec/TBI Build Thread

I guess I'm missing the joke on my pushrods.... I'm not too worried about lack of screw-in studs and guide plates. My rockers are self-guiding and the springs are stock. Least of my worries right now. Maybe some day.... Too risky to open the holes up with the heads still on? Even with...

Last remaining concern on valve train is pushrod hole clearance. Pushrod not centered with 1.6 rockers. Is this too close? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Yeah I took a look at the specs and it would definitely be better on duration. Lift would be better too but if I kept the 1.6 ratio rockers I would be better off changing springs (see MikeB's post above). LSA is actually tighter on the L31 cam tho. Definitely something to consider for the...

    383 Vortec/TBI Build Thread

Yeah, there was lots of discussion on my cam choice earlier in the thread. I know it's not the perfect cam for a 383, but I'm using the 1.6 rockers to at least get a little more lift. And this motor is not going to be a high revving speed demon, just want it to have a bit more low end grunt...

Thanks for checking, Mike. That takes a load off. I'm using the stock L31 cam. With 1.6 rockers I'm coming up with .44 intake/.46 exhaust. Should be good to go there. I'm using used L31 lifters. I didn't see your post before I disassembled two of them tonight. I guess I'll just have to...

Thanks, Mike! Yes, pretty sure they're stock springs. I just went out and measured with the stick part of my calipers - looks pretty darn close to 1.70" height to me. That would be great if you could check for me. I think I'm going to be OK, there is a ton of clearance in between the coils...

    383 Vortec/TBI Build Thread

Worked on valve train a little more tonight. Want to be sure my pushrods are correct length. This pic leads me to believe I'm good, but not 100% sure lifters are staying locked. I soaked them in oil before I put them in, but not sure if that holds or not. Would it change much if they're not...

    383 Vortec/TBI Build Thread

Funny...I'm actually concerned the other way, i.e. too much CR. This is a 3/4 ton 4x4 that I want to be able to tow with, 9.5:1 is the upper limit of what I want, even with vortecs. If you wade through this thread you'll see that I actually switched pistons mid way through the build. The...

    383 Vortec/TBI Build Thread

I think it's just a hair under 9.015. I was able to slide a .006, but not .007, feeler gauge between the top of piston at TDC (got exactly at TDC with a dial gauge) and a straight edge held across the deck. 3.75/2 + 5.7 + 1.433 + .006 = 9.014. With those numbers plus my head gasket numbers...

m55hv pump in stock pan - what oil pickup?

I bought the green stuff today (it's actually Permatex brand, but they use the same color coding). Used that AND I drilled and tapped a hole in the pump body where the pickup tube goes in for a 10-24 set screw. Put that one in with RED loctite. No welding. Should be good to go. So I...

More progress today - got the cylinder heads on and valve train for cylinders 1 and 2 so I could look at coil bind. Looks pretty good, I think. Starting to look like a real engine!
