    what do you have timing set at? Leaning it out with out a knock sensor can be expensive, the vortec heads are very efficient and make the most power at 32* timing. This may be the saving grace for you and trying to lean it out.

    your truck doesnt have a roller cam unless you added one, make sure you are getting the right additives for the oil and you should also read up on oil filters. I didnt used to change my oil before winter as it seemed like a waste then to let it set for the winter. I just changed it in the spring.

    its not a 1:1 comparison, your truck doesnt have .7:1 overdrive ratio of the 700, your truck has a 1:1. 373 will make your truck accelerate faster, be higher rpm on the interstate and use more gas because its over the small rpm window where the engine is efficient.     uh, if he just cut the wires that transmission would be running hot..a normal 700 disengages the pump in OD for efficiency, that is why it needs lock up to keep the converter from slipping and heating up the trans. If all he did was clip the wires I would fix them and not buy a trans from them...

    its more of a math equation but you get it. It depends if they knew what they were doing and removed all the wiring inside the trans and used a non lock up converter or if the just hacked the wiring out of the truck.

    I use this chart for a starting point on cam selection. Remember that engine was built for low rpm towing and sucked when it down shifted and couldnt pull any better. 454/8= 56 ci per cylinder. Top chart 220-230 is what I would be looking at, try to stay 112+ lsa to ease tuning.

    thought all in timing was supposed to be 2400 rpm? Think thats what I had set mine to. The stock cam was also retard 6 degrees making it even worse. I have read the vortec .57 cam was used in the Caprice/Impala also so you could use those timing tables as a starting point also.

    I replaced my crank with an aftermarket one because it wasnt much more expensive than turning a stick one. If I were to do it again I would have gotten the forged crank and internal balancing.
