Got me puzzled to say the least

The original GM GoodWrench engines were simply "service replacement" engines.. Built offshore using new parts, and were very "universal".. Back in the mid '80s, my wife and I ran our small shop with 5 employees. We did a lot of service work for businesses in the oilfield industry.. We replaced a...

    Clutch pedal not fully returning

If the clutch doesn't release until the pedal is almost on the floor, the clutch is way out of adjustment.. Adjust for about 1" free travel at the top..

Got me puzzled to say the least

Ignition timing, timing advance curve, fuel octane, and compression ratio all go hand-in-hand.. 89 octane will work with compression ratios below 9:1, if the timing advance curve isn't too aggressive -- Vortec heads are more forgiving is these areas.

Got me puzzled to say the least

Experienced and skilled talent needed to hear it first hand in person.. Anythting else is pure guess work.. But I can tell you this.. It is NOT a rod "walking back and forth on the wrist pin". and probably not "a valve or two". The wrist pin is a very tight press fit on the rod and it floats in...

Single tank to dual tank FIX!

The '81 up design is a much better system. If it is within his skill set, I suggest 73LAGGY go this route. I've updated many pre'80s to this design.. Haven't done one in years.. Back then, the '81 up harness was available to do this, so it was "almost" a plug and play installation.

Whole A/C system Oil Capacity from R12 to R134A

That's an R-4 compressor - no reservoir... Unless you're going for the "stock look", that's the last choice in compressors.. An A/C system doesn't know which compressor is installed in the system.. All A/C compressors work the same way, they all pump freon while it's in a gaseous state... The...

Why did GM route Circuit Number 30 Fuel Gauge to Tank Unit as they did?

The simplest explanation I can give is GM didn't "rewire" for the second tank.. They simply designed an "add-on" harness for the second tank disconnected a couple plugs and plugged in the add-on harness, cut a hole in the dash for the switch added the switching valve and some plumbing, and...

Single tank to dual tank FIX!

Levi, with all due respect, that's a wiring project not for the inexperienced and faint of heart.. I've done a few of these... Added a second tank where none existed, repaired the wiring that some flake hacked into oblivion, and even installed the late model system on an early version.. My best...

    87 suburban radiator

I put a Derale dual fan with their stainless steel shroud, aluminum 4 core radiator on my truck and relays and controllers for both fans.. And it still runs a little warm in these East Texas summers. A 6.2 is a diesel and comes with the largest factory radiator available. Why would you want to...

    Oil dripping around starter

I'll respond to your second paragraph.. This is a Square Body forum.. I'm not an administrator, so I don't make the rules nor enforce them, only suggest. There is a forum on this site called "Other Vehicles". I'd suggest you post that information there to get a more thorough response... Now...

81 350 SBC is farked, about to replace with 350 SBC bought locally

I'm at odds with the statements in your second paragraph.. I'm one of those that owns 16 acres (In my case it's only 10 acres of totally rural property) with outbuildings. It's not my fault you chose to live in "goddamned Los Angeles County".. You made that choice yourself.. I'm a former shop...

SquareRoot, you are totally misunderstanding my words.. I am OH SO PRO Vintage air products.. I've installed a number of them and, when properly done, they work flawlessly.. I do not have a beef with their products.. I'm trying to convenience crooney1189 that even though they are expensive, it's...

    Factory A/C Conversion for '86

I tend to agree with it being an aftermarket unit, not one I am familiar with.. My guess is it now obsolete and quite possibly parts are no longer available.. Those Vintage Air units have gone up in price drastically in the past year.. Post covid, they were approximately $1400- $1500.. Today...

    Factory A/C Conversion for '86

Read my post again -- the one you quoted.. I did not say it is universal.. On the contrary. I specifically stated it is NOT universal.. And yes, they are somewhat customized. I put the word customized in italics to indicate the system is not full blown custom.. They units can be "customized" by...

    Factory A/C Conversion for '86

The Vintage Air systems are very versatile. Yet, they are not "universal" either. Rather, the kits are what I would call "customized".. The VA individual "kit" components are put together after you place the order.. Among others, a couple of the questions they ask when you place the order are...

    Oil dripping around starter

Never mind how much oil you actually poured in.. "5/8 the way up the stick" doesn't tell us anything about the actual oil level.. The dip stick is calibrated to indicate oil level.. Upper most mark indicates the full mark.. Next mark down is the "one qt low" mark.. Proper amount of oil is...

    Wiring ID help - firewall

Matt, Unlike earlier square bodies, the horn relay on '86 models plugs into the convenience center like the turn signal flasher.. Much like the fuse box, access to the back of the convenience center is a bit difficult. Some disassembly is required. Not so with the tool I suggested. That's why I...

    Wiring ID help - firewall

Blowing fuses indicate a short in the circuit somewhere. I can tell you this: The short is NOT in the steering column. As I explained previously, the horn wire in the column is the ground path.. If it was shorted, the horn would simply sound off (blow) all the time.. It would not blow a fuse...
