    Taillight always on

Disconnect the turn signal switch from the base of the steering column, see if the light goes out.

    350 Running warm

Pull the shroud, clean between the radiator and A/C condenser. You will be amazed how much crap gets stuck there. 215 isn’t terribly hot, especially sitting at a red light in traffic. If that’s as hot as it gets with a 195 t-stat I wouldn’t worry A 180 would probably get you down to around...

Possible Vacuum leak after transmission swap

Take the line completely out. Follow it up to the throttle body or intake manifold and cap it there.

    Engine fan

I have seen that episode. When engaged, they do draw some power. But most people don’t try to race with the engine hot enough to cause the clutch to engage. As I said, I have run my car with and without the fan and clutch, back to back on the same day. There was no difference, maybe a...

    Engine fan

Get the TV cable on the trans sorted out before you drive it. You say it’s sloppy and slides into gear, it’s only going to get worse. Keep in mind, the linkage for the kickdown cable used on a 350 trans won’t work correctly for a 700. I have run my Olds at the track both without the thermal...

No Start and have adjusted switches

There is probably a couple red wires at the ignition switch, each protected by a different fusible link.

Vacuum switch, break switch, and wiring for 700-R4

Looks like grounding pin F will lock the converter, assuming the wiring is good. If you put a test light on pin F you can test the wiring to the trans, thru the brake switch, and related parts.

Vacuum switch, break switch, and wiring for 700-R4

Pin F of the ALDL is converter clutch on most cars/trucks. Have you tried plugging in the trans connector? Sometimes the solenoids stick after they get hot. That will kill the engine coming to a stop. It’s pretty common for people to be cheap and just unplug it instead of replacing the...

No Start and have adjusted switches

If you have no power on the yellow wire with the ignition in the crank position, you have found the problem. Now you need to find out why. It’s easy to narrow down the potential problem area with a little detective work. Disable the ignition, make SURE the trans is in park. Use a heavy gauge...

No Start and have adjusted switches

Check for power at the purple wire at the nuetral safety switch with the key in the crank position. There may be 2 purple wires (one solid purple that goes to the starter terminal, the other might be purple with a yellow tracer, those are power FROM the ignition switch. It will come out of the...

    Clutch style fan

The thermal fan clutch on all my vehicles is a little noisy when you first start the engine, after a few seconds it quiets down to where you can’t hear it. You can definitely hear the fan roar when the clutch engages, I suppose that’s a good thing. There is no question the fan is doing what...

    Clutch style fan

I have never seen a fan with a clutch h that has only 3 blades. 5 and 7 blade fans should be fairly easy to locate I would think. GM made millions of these trucks, parts should be easy to find.

More wiring fun...this time with a video.

Check the taillight fuse first. No taillights, no dashlights. Check for power on the dash lamp fuse (both sides) with the headlights on, and the dimmer turned all the way up. If that’s good, remove the headlight switch. The green wire supplies power to the dash light fuse. It comes out of...

Spark plugs keep fouling and Missing under a load?

No wonder!it’s a plug fouler, it has a Holley. Actually, the plugs don’t look too bad. If it’s missing under throttle, start with a through inspection of the ignition system. Remove the distributor cap and rotor, look at the tiny wires that go to the pickup coil. They are known to break...

    steering column swap

The good thing about these trucks is their simplicity. Even the TBI trucks are pretty basic. If someone is reasonably handy with basic hand tools, it’s easy to keep one of these trucks going. This is a good time to be a automative enthusiast. Almost any repair you could possibly imagine is a...

    CB Radio Antenna Recommendations?

Can you connect an aftermarket antenna to a factory Delco radio/CB combination? It’s been years since I have seen one. I have a CB in my Ram, my wife makes fun of it any chance she gets. I have a Wilson 1000 I keep behind the backseat, I put the antenna on when I want to use it. The Wilson...

    steering column swap

As long as the donor column is optioned the same it should be a very straightforward swap. If your truck has cruise, but the donor column doesn’t, and you want to keep the cruise, that complicates things. Same thing with delay wipers, headlight dimmer switch, etc.

    Weird reverse issue

If that’s your only concern, relax. After sitting a few days the torque converter naturally drains into the pan. Once you start the truck it takes a couple seconds to refill the converter. Regardless of what people say, there is no reason to fear changing the fluid and filter on a high...

Anybody wanna help me figure out what these plugs are for?

I’m pretty sure the top photo is the plug for the factory radio speakers. Does your truck have cruise? You didn’t mention the year, I’m guessing probably 83ish and up? The second photo looks like where the cruise control lever would plug in. The 3rd pic is speed sensor. I think there is a...

    700R4 Speedo Issue

Another possibility, especially if someone has played around with this truck is mismatched speedo gear housings. If you look on the speedo housing you will see a series of numbers like “34 35 36…..”, that means that housing is for gears with that tooth count. As the tooth count changes, the...

    Fuel Pump?

Unfortunately, that’s typical of the ethanol fuel today. Refineries don’t bother with additives to prevent fuel boiling off after a hot shutdown. It’s not needed for the 99.9 % of the cars/trucks on the road today. Modern vehicles have closed fuel systems with electric fuel pumps that...

    700R4 Speedo Issue

Pull the instrument cluster so you can see the end of the speedo cable. Raise the rearend so the wheels are off the ground, start the truck and put it in gear. If the cable spins, the problem is with the speedo head.
