I won't have the perfect answer to that.
To some the presence of 4 bolt mains over the 2 bolt edition would be an improvement so as many of the early engines were 4 bolt they would fit that scenario.
The only early block issue I had was a 1972 #3951511 that came from a Biscayne police cruiser...
It's a 1980 year 509.
The #3951509 block was the best production block for the 400.
The only GM 400 small block better was a Bow Tie race block.
The increased middle cylinder bulges were from more material to further reduce core shift. The thick pan rails lent themselves to the extra machine...
Counting freeze plugs won't help you. Currently I have 2- 400 4bolt engines casting #3951511 and both have 3 per side as pictured above. I also have this 1980 400 engine casting #3951509 with just 2 per side. Look at the balancer for a quick ID. I've had the 400 with 2 per side and boss for...
There are several diesel conversions around here with Detroits.
The 4-53's are the go to here.
They fit well and have more power than you can imagine.
There are other choices that would require more work.
You could even go air-cooled. A link to a 4-53 in an old Chevy.

Not true on the 70's duallies.
I ordered/bought several and until the 80's models I had to order 16" tires as an option. The standard wheel/tire configuration on the duallies were 16.5.
This truck in question is most likely a 3/4 ton 3+3 that has had a dually rear end and bed added.
No cab...
The toll booth operators have been hitting me up for a third axle with this setup. It cost me more to run the pike in a few states than a Lincoln Navigator.
Dual wheel pickups have some financial downsides.
They immediately put you in the next higher class on a toll road in most states as a 10K gvw with dual rear wheels.
They require cab markers which toll booth workers are told to take notice of and charge you the next class.

Stop telling people that the hydraboost brakes only came with a diesel.
That is wrong.
Every 30 series GM light truck I have had since 1973, most all gas engine equipped, were equipped with hydraboost brakes.
The hard part for this swap is finding the lower power steering pump mounting bracket...
Beech 18, miltary C45 are my favorites also. Goes way back to watching "Sky King" on Saturday mornings.
I have moved a couple of them for friends with my 1979 BB powered K30.
There is one nearby that is used at a parachute jump school. They have had 14 jumpers in it.
Another closeby that needs...
