Discussion and Opinions on 83'-87' Builds

I know the OP hasn’t returned but maybe you could explain your opinion about some of these things you say are no good. Center bolt valve covers? Lol. If Having or not having those is a reason to not buy a truck, that makes about zero sense. That’s pickin fly sht out of pepper. 83-87 no good...

    ATF Leak?

There’s an o ring around the housing and a seal on the cable end. New gasket kits are $12-20 and the whole housing with seals is like $50. Commonly available replacement parts. Can get em on Amazon even…lol. It’s an easy fix.

Rims won't fit on rear with drums.

Agreed. I can think of 4 solutions that range from a few hours and $0 to $60 and hitting BUY NOW on Amazon that would solve or likely solve the issue as we understand it. Honestly the most time consuming option is probably about the same time it takes to make 2 round trips to the tire shop to...

Help finding a short, Who's good at ELECTRICAL???

Yes that makes sense. And a shunt is designed to measure large amp flows. I was confused as I wouldn’t consider buying one to find a parasitic draw because I’d presume it is not large enough to blow the fuse(s) in a multimeter.

What have you done to your square lately??

Lucky for you Squarebody Suburbans are a great value. Far cheaper to purchase than pickups. There’s alot of them for sale up here. Clean ones, and they go for roughly half of what comparable pickups go for. And 2wd burbs are really cheap. And idk about old vs new holding up longer. Ain’t no way...

What have you done to your square lately??

Nope I’m definitely not. Especially the blue one! It’s a pavement princess. I wouldn’t even want to scratch the tires! Lol What I said wasn’t an affront to you or your truck. And if I was painting an off road wheeler or a bulldozer I’d just use some Agricultural paint too. I don’t doubt that...

Help finding a short, Who's good at ELECTRICAL???

K so I was intrigued and looked up the owners manual for that meter and looks like you’re doing everything right, now. You set volts to DC default is AC. You’re on auto ranging. Note the cutoff between mA setting and A setting is .4A or 400mA. It’s possible the 10A plug was/is where you need...

Help finding a short, Who's good at ELECTRICAL???

Ok that’s perplexing! You’re doing it right. Before I replied earlier I went out and checked the 86 that I knew has a parasitic draw. Digital multimeter like yours but much older. That’s how I knew I had a 40mA draw like I said. lol. Just to make sure I wasn’t giving bad direction..lol. I’m...

Help finding a short, Who's good at ELECTRICAL???

It’s basically a permanent installation of what you’re doing but it goes on the positive side. (I think). It’s used to measure current draw. Common homeowner application would be in a camper so you can see what components use how much current draw. Like to calculate how long your batteries will...

What have you done to your square lately??

The Wesco guys in Auburn are helpful and not pretentious. Red is the most expensive color you can buy. I’ll reserve comment about spending many hours and $ to get a vehicle ready to paint and then using cheap oil based paint. But it doesn’t make sense for about all the reasons one can think of...

Rims won't fit on rear with drums.

Fair enough. How close are they to fitting? Would 1/4 “ spacers work? That’s easiest if they do and costs less than having the tires re-mounted. Another possible option you could measure up is if the threads are too short for your comfort (you’d ideally want to grab 9-10 threads minimum) is...

Rims won't fit on rear with drums.

While I hadn’t heard of them before, they’re priced similar to other mid range mudders. They’re super aggressive though so more likely to take more weight. Did they all take a lot? How much? Maybe you can convince the tire shop to rotate them a rebalance. After you clearance the rims and repaint…lol

    Barn Door Alignment?

I’ve never messed with barn doors on any gen burb, but have always heard how people don’t like them (not sure why, maybe this is why?). It’s very reasonable they could be tweaked or bent, or need to be bent to align. Assuming you can use body shims maybe to open the tight gap. Did you use the...

Help finding a short, Who's good at ELECTRICAL???

^ For mA, the red lead should be in the lower left plug on the multimeter. Where it says milliamps and microamps. You have it in the voltage and resistance + plug looks like. 2 mA is nothing. That’s 2/1000 or 0.002A. Your battery would not go dead forever at 2mA. But I don’t trust that reading.

Jesus Christ! You bought a fully assembled engine I presume? Hope it’s not too soon, but if you squint and look at it, kinda looks like an aerial view of a marina after Hurricane Helene!

Nice multi meter! Check in milliamps and/or make sure you’re plugged into the right pins with your leads on the multimeter.

dual battery w/isolator and solar charging

Ahh got it. Yes an old school simple 12v ignition triggered relay isolator/combiner would cut the link between the batteries as soon as the key is off. OP has a voltage sensing relay/combiner/isolator whateveryoucallit he’s installing.

Help finding a short, Who's good at ELECTRICAL???

Test light requires a healthy amp draw. Remember what is being tested is the current flowing through the chassis (like a live short). It’s like the chassis is the positive post of a “battery” but it’s the stray voltage going to ground where it shouldn’t. (Been a while since my EE classes...

Help finding a short, Who's good at ELECTRICAL???

You don’t say what setting, V or A you’re using. To my understanding you’ll always “see” 12V across the neg battery post to ground. That is the voltage potential of the battery. To check for a draw, you measure current. IE amps. A draw on the battery connects the + to ground, completing the...

Sorry, wasn’t bagging on you for painting them, but comparing what WV offered for for different part numbers and painted primed etc trying to figure out why they didn’t fit. Still didn’t see your part number on WV website and the closest numbers were advertised as I mentioned back on p 1 or...

Alternately, there’s the option of wheel spacers. Either the real deal 1.5” spacers that true up the rear track width to the same as the front. Or if you have enough thread on the lugs since you’re running thin steel wheels, some simple 1/4” spacer plates assuming that gets you enough to clear...

Wow, who’d ever think this discussion would grow so many legs? @Cyrillious, my first observation of your picks I thought the drum was hitting the actual rim, to the outside of the steel lips on the “slots” in the rim. But it’s touching the rolled lip only, correct? I agree with @mlsceo that is...

Electically speaking, that works, whether he has a voltage sensing combiner or a simple solenoid or batteries just hooked in parallel, or batteries completely isolated (not hooked together by any meas). But would only be necesssry if the latter, which is not the case, as there would be no way to...
