How many bolts hold the transmission on and where?

Having to change out the flywheel and obviously you have to slide the transmission back but I am unsure of how many bolts are holding it on and how many in TOTAL I need to be looking for. So far I think there are at least 6 on the front of the transmission for sure, 2 left, 2 right, and 2 towards the top and man... what a pain in the duff it is to get them undone. Diagram or picture would be of great help!

I wonder if there is enough room to drop the flywheel without undoing the trans, after the torque converter is pushed back?

Not really. It's much easier to simply remove the trans, get it out of the way so the flexplate can be removed and new one installed with ease.

That's what I thought, and as alic20 said dipstick and all that jazz. Wish there was an easier way to replace the flywheel but it is what it is.

Hopefully this doesn't turn out like that old thread where the dude asked how many bolts hold the engine in the truck.

But I'm betting that @TheBigBlue2500 knows that if something doesn't want to come out, the correct thing to do is look for the bolts that were overlooked. Not just yank harder, lol.

Been using an extension but when it's 18 to 20 degrees and your on cold cement and your fingers are numb it's really no fun and I don't have a transmission shop around my town.

Then you don't have a flywheel, you have a flex plate...They are not the same nor can the terms be used interchangeably...Just FYI if you ever have to order a new flex plate and start searching for 'TH400 Flywheels'.

Step one is to pull the crossmember to tilt the trans down. Also make sure to pull the distributor cap on a chevy. With the trans tilted back you can easily get to the bellhousing bolts from down below.

If you’re absolutely sure all 6 bellhousing bolts are removed and the trans still won’t come off the back of the engine, more than likely the dowel pins are corroded in the trans bellhousing. Fisk them with penetrating oil and apply some heat. Work slowly so you don’t crack the case.

You don’t have to completely remove the trans, you can slide it back a few inches to allow access to the flexplate bolts.

Correct procedure is to Remove the flex plate bolts before the bell housing auto trans case bolts and before separating the trans case from the block

C'mon man... :uhoh2::Big Laugh:
