I'm probably in the minority here, but I much prefer a a factory dash pad with a few cracks in it than a new aftermarket pad with a wavey top. To me, sub-OE fitment and quality looks just as bad as cracks.

If I was building a show truck, I'd probably go with NOS or Just Dashes.

I remember finding decent square body dash pads in the wrecking yards, back in the day....if we had money extra, after getting what we needed for our trucks in that trip, we'd get them and resell them at the swap meets. But that was 20-25 years ago, when square body trucks weren't as Hip and Desirable, and they were still in the yards....

Yeah, 15+ years ago, you could still find really nice factory dash pads. Many of them were actually recently replaced factory dash pads. Basically "nos", but significantly cheaper. I remember paying only $125 for a show condition dash pad and Cheyenne door panels for my '77 K5.

Unfortunately I am building a show truck. Finding a show quality dash pad seems akin to finding a Unicorn though. :emotions122:
Well, if it's a show truck, I've seen NOS pads go for almost $2k. Gotta throw down if you want that quality as they won't get cheaper from here on out...

If you want a different color than black for the AMD pad, can you dye it another color, or does that not work with black? My original GMC dash pad is a real dark brown that coordinates with the lighter colors on the saddle tan interior. I’d like to go original color if it’s possible
While the interior/vinylu paint stuff works prettty good. It’s counterproductive to make a new show quality piece immediately less durable or long lasting.
Be like buying a new car deciding it’s the wrong color and krylon paintimg it a different color imo.

Yeah, there’s a guy down in Marysvile called Corbin’s Custom Upholstery. He just quoted me 775$ for a recover without speaker holes, and 925$ with speaker holes. I get that it will be show quality, but sheesh…
No it's not cheap but Id do another recover anyday over the available options. Mine has some extra detail on the top so it was more than that but those are not terrible prices if they do good work. There is alot of time that goes into doing them correctly.

Personally if I was doing an 81+ I'd delete the dash speakers anyways an go with a kick panel setup.

Just Dashes process sounds like they re-cover your dash using vinyl manufactured in the chosen color and not simply dyed/painted. Am I correct? Plan to ask them on Monday but I figure someone here knows.

USA1 quality is great, but lead time, expense and questionable customer service steered me away from them. Cheyenne has a good reputation but I believe they've stopped using steel frames for their dashes and have gone to ABS. Don't really want plastic structure.

I recently ordered a Brothers Trucks/Holley dash pad (blue) for my '84. P/N PAD87VNBLUE is a vinyl-covered foam with steel structure. They shipped me a urethane dash pad (steel structure). And it came in an OER box, with a Dashes Direct P/N (D10018109) on it. Lots of cross-pollination in this space. It's on its way back to Holley now.

To my knowledge from when I was selling parts a few years back, all the ones from the major companies were reboxed dash direct units. The only ones that weren't are USA1 an Cheyenne. I could never figure out who they were buying from to try an get direct into that source.

Following this thread with interest. I doubt my 84 k30 dash pad can be saved. Too bent, cracked and warped a little. Expect complete replacement in its future. Meanwhile, dash rug hides a lot but doesn't look great.

@WFarm are those bucket seat with center console stock for your k5? I'd like to convert my single cab stock bench seat to buckets with center console.

Yes, the seats and center console are stock for the K5. This setup must have been one of the earlier factory interiors to include cup holders. Surprisingly most of the center console is cast metal, with fiberglass at the very bottom where it bolts to the floor.

After my earlier dealings with USA1 my wife promised to euthanize me if I ever dealt with them again.:gr_guns:
What's the story on USA1? I was going to order some vinyl dye and cab mounts from them.

Another cheap option for people is coverlay for around $150. I’m pretty happy with the results. I used a dash filler compound, sanded the dash down before applying the coverlay.

@molus, that’s incredible. I’m not familiar with coverlay and filler option. Do you have a handy links?

Does it cover the bottom of the driver's side end, that you can only see with the door open?
I've seen some that don't.
