Hello everyone,

New square body owner from CA. Just wanted to say hello and get some more info on my truck. This is my first square body.

I’m usually tinkering around with older pre-smog vehicles but ended up with this 1982 GMC Sierra Classic for a good price.

It appears to be solid. Recently installed the new seat and carpet it came with and a spare Retrosound radio I had on the shelf.

Fresh plugs, wire set, cap and rotor. Carb seems fine, just needs Choke adjustment to make sure it turns on easier when cold.

I did swap the dash with LEDs and replaced some gauges. So far everything works minus the heater blower motor which is next on my list with the cold weather coming in.

Swapped in a new master cylinder since it was leaking and will work on the front calipers next. Replaced door and window seals. Will need a new windshield in the future.

After decoding the VIN , it appears that I have a 3/4 ton truck.

HD brakes most likely since it’s has a G on the vin for 8001-9000 GVW / Hydraulic brake system designation.

I did notice that the engine has a smog air pump and the air injection system but After crawling under the truck to bleed the brakes, I noticed it had no Catalytic converter. Just a Y pipe and single exhaust.

Could this be one of the non-Cat CA trucks?

I replaced all the vac hoses on the engine in preparing for the Smog test to finalize my registration. Any chance anyone else has this? I’m hoping it’s a non Cat truck, would make passing easier. It runs really well after the tune up and is super quiet and smooth.

Here’s a picture of my VIN

Welcome from Austria. I could be as it's a 3/4 ton truck. I checked the vin and got 8 records for smog checks.
Is the emissions sticker gone?

I honestly did not check. I’ll take a look tomorrow. Is it the one on the Air cleaner?

I noticed it had a diagram for the hose routing.

Or would it be elsewhere? I know I’m missing the glovebox one with RPO codes.

Thanks for the check! Didn’t realize it can be looked up like that

Yes the sticker on the air cleaner or on top of the radiator support. If it is a truck with catalytic converter the word CATALYST is very prominent on the decal. Or NON CATALYST.

Here’s all the decals left on the air cleaner.

The “Engine Exhaust Emission Control@ Decal does mention Heavy Duty engine.

I don’t see the non Catalyst or Catalyst on it.

You have a truck without catalytic converter. The stickers vary with years, if it is a truck with catalytic converter it would be on the sticker. Your AIR system has to work. Make an emission test then you know if your system works or what needs to be fixed.

You have a California HD emissions truck, so no cats. Just make sure all the vacuum lines are connected correctly and all the parts on the air cleaner sticker are in place or you will fail. Check the timing too.

FYI look at your fill pipes. They are probably larger diameter than the standard unleaded style as the truck would have run on regular leaded gas back in the day. My '85 K30 is that way. Your gauges probably do not say "Unleaded Fuel Only." Also your emissions tag only says AIR. That's all that's required. You'll notice on mine it says AIR/EGR as mine requires both.
