Do you know what socket? Was it a spline socket or just a 12 point be ok? Everywhere I checked said 36mm but this one is much bigger. At least 39mm.
12 point socket was the confirmation I needed. I’m going to caliper it to see what size I need so I can order the proper size
It's not 36mm. I've got that in my toolbox and was way too small. I went and bought a 38mm 12 sided socket. It, too, was way too small. I'm putting a caliper on it today to determine exactly what size it is and ordering a socket based on that. I only wish it was the size that the rest of the internet said should be on it. I have a feeling that at some point in time someone replaced the axles on this blazer with some chinesium junk which gave us this janky axle nut situation.
That does look like a tin cover.
If that's the case there should be a cotter pin running through the tin cover. I can't see that being the cover, if it was that would be an epic fail for the history books for COB but I don't see him being that naïve haha.
